Limmers: Not Your Off-the-Shelf Hiking Boots (NHPR)

I have a pair of Limmers, and I love them, but I rarely wear them anymore. Too heavy. My go-to boots the past couple of years has been a pair of light fabric/leather boots that I got dirt cheap at Cabela's.

Bear euthanized after biting photo taking hiker

I agree. I'm also unhappy with their use of the word "euthanized" as a euphemism for "killed." If the bear was sick or injured, and the intent of the killing was to relieve its suffering, that's euthanasia. This was not euthanasia.

    Summer Hiking Goals

More time in the tent. Castle Ravine/Northern Presi basecamp. Southern Presi/Dry River loop. Pemi loop. Catskills.

    Would you climb Mt Everest?

Too crowded. Too crazy. There are many fine mountains in the world; I don't need to bag the biggest just because it's the biggest.

care to discuss your winter day/climbing pack ?

Like Hikes4fun, I use the old Osprey Stratos 40. I'm glad the pack is in good shape, because I'm not seeing any current packs out there that I like as well.

    Equinox Peakbagging

This has been my best peakbagging winter. I'd like to get one more. My next (and last) opportunity to bag a winter 4000-footer this season will be on Saturday, March 20. I need to be done by 1:32 PM. Sunrise is at 6:50 AM. The candidates are: Cannon Flume Hancocks Kinsmans Lafayette Lincoln...

    So, what'd you get?

I must've been good, because Santa (aka Mrs. Pilgrim) got me what I asked for: REI Flash 65 pack, to replace the pack that I destroyed on a disaster backpack trip in August.

    Death at Cathedral Ledge

The story didn't hit the Conway Daily Sun until this morning. A member of Conway PD is quoted as saying that accident and homicide had been ruled out; "...there would have been no other reason besides suicide to cross over to the other side of the fence." Interestingly, or sadly, perhaps, the...

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

Timing and knowledge of local roads will get you through the area with no problem. Drive like a local. I'm not a fan of the Moat, but I'm probably the only one... Other east side recommendations: Lobster Trap on West Side Road has the best seafood and Italian food in the MWV. If you're feeling...

    moderate hikes in white mountains?

For dayhikes, I think you might find the NH 52 With-A-View list interesting. Kearsarge North will give you the tower you're looking for.

    Sedona AZ hiking ?

We did a day of vortex hikes that was fun, if you're into such things: Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Boynton Canyon. Sedona is a fun town, but traffic can be as challenging as N. Conway, especially on weekends. Popular trailhead parking lots can fill up. Parking permits are required at some...

    Leaps of faith, name them!

The "scooch" on the Wildcat Ridge Trail affects me similarly. If you've been up there, you know where I'm talking about. Just one big step, but...

    Hiker Type - Summer/Winter/Year-Round?

I voted year round, but I tend to avoid the spring because of mud, bugs, and high rivers.

    Strangest trail activity you've observed?

Eleven or twelve years ago, I met a small, loud man with big hair and big dog hiking down the Crawford Path between the summit of Mt. Washington and Lakes hut. Man and dog were both barefoot. A couple of years later, I met a large, quiet woman leading a girl scout group up the Old Bridle Path...

    Secret camping spots

As usual, Metsky said it best. You bet I have some secret sites, and that's the way they're staying: secret. The USFS has designated campsites along the Great Gulf Trail, the Davis Path, and the Dry River Trail. None of them are on any current trail maps, although once upon a time, many of...

Snapshots with Unique Photo Perspectives of Familiar Places?

Not the best photo, but here's a peek at a little bit of Chocorua in the distance from a slab near the summit of rarely-climbed Bartlett Mountain (featured in the first photo that 1HappyHiker posted to start the series):

    Water at Garfield Ridge Campsite

Some sources describe the water source as a spring, some as a brook. Either way, it's substantial and reliable. I've been through there numerous times (including July 6th, when I stayed at the campsite), and it has always been flowing.

Thanks to all; that's the information I was looking for.

    Wild River shelters removal

I'm bumping this up to inquire if anybody knows the status of structure removal in the Wild River area. My understanding is that work was supposed to start this summer. I'm planning a backpack trip to the area in a couple of weeks and I'd like to know what to expect.
