ATC working on how to re-open the trail to thru hikers

In some ways, yes, this would be the ideal year to thru-hike, at least in terms of not having a huge bubble of hikers to deal with. Then again, that's what attracts some of them. (Not me, in case you couldn't tell.) There were a handful of thru-hikers in PA when I was out a week or two ago...

Dang. 10 years ago, I would have been all over this.

    Pemi loop advice

The spring by Garfield Shelter/Campsite is your best bet. Good, clean water, and about halfway through the loop. With Galehead closed, I think that's your go-to.

If Washington was another 1000' would it be glaciated?

Treeline in the CO Rockies is around 11,500 feet versus 4,500 in the Northeast (roughly). Colorado has "permanent snowfields", obviously not that much higher than treeline. It seems like another 1000 feet would make a permanent snowfield a possibility, or at least snow that occasionally makes it...

    Welcome Back! (Hosting Changes)

Pretty much didn't understand a thing you said. ;) BUT, thank you for the work you put in to keep the site running smoothly. (That much I do understand.)

ATC working on how to re-open the trail to thru hikers

There are a few thru-hikers still, though many/most ended their thru-hike. In a sense, it's 'lucky' when the shutdown happened because the vast majority hadn't gotten very far. I imagine if the shutdown occurred when the bubble was already in New England, many would have chosen to finish up instead.

Advice on 13k'ers and 14k'ers in Colorado

You could always travel a bit south of there to the Indian Peaks Wilderness. A lot less crowded and some fantastic peaks. There are several peaks from Brainerd Lake, or aim for James Peak from Moffitt Tunnel.

The Priest vs Chimney Rock And Three Ridges In Virginia

My memories of that area are pretty old, too, but I recall The Priest being more scenic than Three Ridges. The vertical rise is significant, but not nearly as rugged as the Whites. You'll be fine. By late March/early April, you're more likely to have pleasant weather. The valleys will be green...

    Accessibility of northern Pemi trailheads

Plan A is to use North Twin Trail to do a Hale, Zealand, Bonds, Twins loop. Plan B is to use Garfield Trail for Garfield, Galehead, Twins, Guyot, Bonds, and return via Gale River Trail. What is the access to Garfield and Gale River trailheads? Looks like parking just off Rt. 3 for a roadwalk (~1...

    Accessibility of northern Pemi trailheads

Okay - thanks. I've never parked at 7 Dwarfs, so I'm not familiar with that route. The snowmobile trail must cross the river near the hotel and then hook up to Haystack Road? It must track more westerly than southward if I'm understanding where the private property is. Is it easy enough to...

    Accessibility of northern Pemi trailheads

Gotcha - thanks. Every time I drive that road, I tell myself to track the mileage. And every time I forget.

    Accessibility of northern Pemi trailheads

Unless I'm misunderstanding something (quite possible), I'm getting conflicting information. Josh says Little River Road is not an option at all. Peakbagger, you're saying you can still park at the end of Little River Road (and, IIRC, cross the bridge there and then head south)? Ken, you're...

    Accessibility of northern Pemi trailheads

So basically no one touches the Hale FWT or North Twin Trail in the wintertime? Unless you roadwalk nearly the entirety of Haystack Road (2-3 miles)?

    Accessibility of northern Pemi trailheads

Looking to venture into the Hale / Zealand / Guyot / Twins / Galehead area. I wasn't sure what the latest accessibility issues were with the various trailheads -- Garfield Trail, Gale River Trail, and North Twin Trail. Ideally, I'd like to go up the N Twin Trail to Hale, but I know the Little...

Guyot Shelter will be closed September 1st-18th

Any word about the new shelter being bigger or smaller, the same design or different? That shelter holds some good memories going back to the 1990s! It was noticeably leaning last fall when I visited, so I'm glad to see it getting some TLC.

Twin Brook Trail -Quite a Surprise

I haven't done Twin Brook Trail in twenty years, but I remember it being a very pleasant hike up to Galehead from 13 Falls. The upper FBT from Garfield was a mess when I did it, though it was very shortly after the spring melt.

    Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

Details are a bit fuzzy in my memory, but there's an area south of Asheville that I went to several times. The Black Balsam area was fantastic--open meadows, high mountains, long views, and plenty of free/legal camping. Nearby Graveyard Falls was a short hike to several magnificent campsites and...

Snow Conditions in the woods from a "pro"

He's not the first AT thru-hiker to give up in NH this year. The first guy through gave up just after Kinsman Notch at the end of April. Seems to have ignored a lot of advice and thought he could push through it.
