Dix Buttress Slide: A Monster on the Mountain

Excellent images and motion (video). The map w/ the route drawn on it makes clear the challenges you overcame. Good meeting you on the trail after your adventure; great to read that 200 lbs of stone didn't damage your foot!

Chronic Lyme Disease - watch those ticks

Wonderful... one more reason to enjoy Winter hiking more than 3-season hiking.

Joe, Thanks for the trail info. You're right about the snowmelt making for miserable hiking this time of year; pat yourself on the back for having saved me several $100 in gas/hotel just to be disappointed.

Owl's Head on either Fri 16th or Mon 19th?

Do bear in mind that the snowmelt resulting from this heatwave is going to make for "interesting" river crossings or a very moist bushwhack... not saying it can't be done, but it would not be for the faint of heart. I'd have my pack unbuckled in case you go under.

Now that's being stealthy... Let me guess, you used a 70-300mmVR on a DX body?

High Peaks Partner for this week- Thus, Fri or Sat

ADK High Peaks Partner for this week- Thus, Fri or Sat Yeah, I know it's short-fuzed notice. That's the nature of my work schedule. Trying to work on the remaining 42 of the NE111. About 1/3 of my NE 67 peaks were in winter or sub 32F conditions. I'm open to anything but Porter, Cascade...

    Three weeks of hikes

ADK High Peaks? Tim, Any interest in bagging some of the ADK 46? I'm open to any of them except Phelps, Cascade, Porter and Big Slide, which I've already done. Working on the NE111.

    Peak-bagging the Washington Monument

Well, this didn't fit in any other forum here. But I thought that some might enjoy seeing images of an altogether different type of peak-bagging. I don't know anything beyond that he is surveying for damage done during a recent earthquake and the fact that it's still closed pending repairs.

Congratulations to Ed Hawkin's for his NH3K finish!

My goodness... every 3k in the Granite State. According to Google results, there's 175 of these peaks... I can't image- Bushwhack City, I'm sure. Googling also reveals that there is a NH 1,000 Highest- do they plan on- oh, I won't even ask. In any case, congratulations.

Irene blowdown compared to 1950 hurricane

On its way... thanks for the recommendation. It's coming with 2 other books related to peak-bagging... good grief, this "hobby" always starts off reasonable, then... At least I held off buying the 2 latter ADK books that only had 1 hike each in them, not a good ROI there. I can quit anytime I...

    NYTs: Aging Well Through Exercise

Plus at age 42, it's such a thrill to zip past your 18, low 20-something college classmates going up 3 flights of stairs. 30 feet elevation gain... no problem! It's hard to stifle a snarky "That's why you should bag peaks" comment while they look on huffing & puffing!

Irene blowdown compared to 1950 hurricane

Mr. Goodwin's book has just been purchased per your recommendation. Maybe he owes you a Clif Bar as a "commission" for your referral! I agree that Burnside's book is out-of-date for planning purposes. But it's a great read because not only does it show how peak-bagging really gets to you, but...

Attention Peakbaggers! Soliciting list / peak data

Thanks to all who did this. Perhaps I outta spend a day or 2 this summer working on a trail croo.

Irene blowdown compared to 1950 hurricane

Nope, that's not me. I hate the stuff- makes it easier to lose the trail, if you decide to go through it, it's a pain if you have any traction on... yuck. I'm just a peakbagger checking off another list.

My Epic Trek To Owls Head 10-22-11

I thought the images of the crossings were the best. I did Owls Head in Sept. or Oct. 2005, when the currents were really low, and can appreciate how fortunate I was! Can't imagine doing the slide on wet rock.

Irene blowdown compared to 1950 hurricane

Grouse, D, Tom, Puma, Thanks for the feedback. Good to know that the peak-bagging isn't affected, though I have to put things in perspective and feel sorry for all the local residents some of whom are no doubt still trying to get back on their feet. I had based my impression upon there still...

Irene blowdown compared to 1950 hurricane

Grouse, Sorry, I didn't make it clear that I was thinking only about the ADK. The reason why there's a lot more blowdown on the trailless peaks there compared to New England is because there was a 1950 hurricane there. Not really considering coming back to any of the New England 67 until after...

Irene blowdown compared to 1950 hurricane

Irene blowdown in the ADK compared to 1950 ADK hurricane ___In the ADK, specifically.____ As far as the amount of blowdown goes... If the 1950 hurricane were a "10", and the worst winter storm (in terms of blowdown) of the past 10 years were a "3", how would Irene rate? Again, this is in...
