Your Top Ten Photos of 2014!

The end of the calendar year is always a great time to reflect upon all of the hikes we've done and places we've been in 2014! The quality of pictures we can get from our cell phones and other small cameras has never been greater, allowing us to almost always be ready to capture the moment. I...

    Wood Lilies?

Wood lilies are my favorite summer wildflower, and I'm looking to include them into some of my landscape photographs this summer. I know of a few lower peaks around the White Mountains where they grow and have landscape photographic potential, but I'm curious if anyone else has seen any...

    2014 Spring Wildflower Thread

We're off to a bit of a late start this year, and it's threatening to be very late in some areas. Ice flowing down the river this morning, a foot of snow in the yard in SeNH, three feet around the base of Chocorua last weekend...and no sign of the crocuses or skunk cabbage...

Your Top Ten Photos of 2013!

It's almost time to turn the calendar and turn to the new year, and it's a great time to reflect upon all of the wonderful places we've been in 2013! Many of us take our camera along with us when we hike, and the quality of small cameras, and the accessibility to cameras has never been...

Your Top Ten Photos of 2012!

Around this time every year, we begin to recap and recall the year in hiking, and reflect upon all of the wonderful places we've been. Many of us take our camera along with us, and capture special moments. These may be aestetically beautiful, or capture something with a special meaning. I...

    2012 Spring Wildflower Thread

It shouldn't necessarily be, but it's that time THIS year again. Crocuses in my neighborhood are blooming, and with two days in the 70s in early march, the 80's in the forecast, folks who hike the Ossipees, Belknaps and Pawtuckaways should be seeing the hepatica VERY soon! This thead is a way...

    Sunset From Owl's Head...

The other Owl's Head...Probably one of the best views for effort in the Whites! Have always wanted a blazing alpenglow shot from this peak, and yet it eludes me. Have always found clouds either on the peak or at the horizon. Fortunately, it's an easy hike (save the last 50 yards!!) and I could...

    Storm Clouds Over Mount Morgan...

Hiked up last night hoping for sunset light from the ledges. It poured most of the way up. Then...this happened...and this is why I hike! Dramatic Sky Over Mount Morgan by Jim Salge, on Flickr

    Mount Monroe Sunset...

I hung out and around the New England Alpine Zone yesterday (into last night) photographing the alpine flowers. It's an interesting year for them, as the ice earlier this week, combined with near 100mph winds has clearly impacted the quality of the blooms, but there are plenty of flowers to be...

    Sunrise on Lafayette...

6AM! The sun now rises after 6AM...making sunrise hikes so (ooooo) much more tolerable. I ran up to Lafayette from Greenleaf yesterday morning. Just a few clouds in the sky, and the alpenglow was intense. Need to go back for some different style shots...but it was a GREAT morning up...

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

Woke up this morning at baldface, and saw some intersting yellow waves of smoke in the sky, and soon after the smell of wildfire filled the air. Visibility is now about as bad as I've seen it in the whites...black flies seemingly uneffected! Hope for a windshift soon...

    Overnight at Flat Mountain Pond...

In the middle of winter, I normally think nothing of getting up before 5AM to get to a location by the post 7AM sunrises. Summer is much different. Sunrises are now only a bit after 5AM, with good light starting during the 4AM hour. A two to three hour driving or hiking window equates to a...

The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

Flowers have been coming out in my area a little over a week earlier than last year, and people in southern areas should be on the lookout for Colt's foot, hepatica and early violets after the next warm spell, whenever that may be... The past few years, these threads have been incredibly...

    On 'The Trail' to Pierce...

With the weather looking next to perfect yesterday, a buddy and I decided to head up to Pierce to take in a sunset. An alpenglow shot of the classic view has been in my mind for a while, and I was hoping that with a touch of fresh snow, clear skies and a well coated Washington, this would be...

Where to? Overnight hike with students in Vermont...

I've been the leader of the high school outing club in the school I teach at for a few years now, and we've managed three overnight hikes a year during my tenure. As I know the shelters and trails in the Whites well, that's where we've always gone. This year the kids want to go to...

    Sunrise on Wildcat...

There have been two things that I’ve long wanted to do, and have consistently been put on the back seat for one reason or another the past few years. One is catch sunrise from Wildcat as the alpenglow hits the eastern slopes of Mount Washington. The other is to learn to telemark ski, to ease the...

Carter Notch Trip With HS Outing Club...

Many of my trips to the White Mountains are made purely for the enjoyment of the mountains, and the hope of sharing that enjoyment on film. Leading the Outing Club at the high school that I teach at on trips adds an extra dimension to that sharing. Students get to experience the outdoors, gain...

    Break-in Alert... **

Just a note that my car, and a friends car were smashed across the street from nineteen mile brook last night. From what I've heard from the state police, and a forest service employee...it's not been very common at all this winter...so just lucky I guess. Wierd what was taken...from my car...
