    Looking for a softshell

Finding a softshell under $200 has been a challenge. Mountain Hardwear and OR used to make models that fit the bill. Now, they are big bucks or super thin stretchy fabric that are more appropriate as rain gear. Earlier this year I sent my 15 year old Mountain Hardware back under warranty to fix...

    NE111 Roster, patches and decals

Completer #142, Camel's Hump October '85. At that time finishers received a nice, spiral-bound roster with names, peaks and finisher number. In the back, a section with each finisher's 'biography' and a separate section for winter finishers. Albert Robertson was in charge at the time and he sent...

Tops of boots above ankles wearing out

My semi-soft ankle braces wear out the soft padding around the tops of my hiking boots. After a few months the covering is worn and torn. Any suggestions for something I can put on the tops of the boot ankles to avoid the destruction? Something that won't ruin the ankle braces? Thanks

    replacement softshell recommendations

My long-loved OR softshell is showing its age, and I just sent an even older Mountain Hardware softshell back to have the blown-out pit zip replaced. Looking for advice on a replacement. Both softshells have good hoods, very thin fleece linings. One has pit zips. Neither were super expensive. I...

    Post-knee replacement hiking ?

After decades of pounding my knees running, racing, hikes, one of my knees keeps crying "Help". I've been seeing one of the best sports medicines docs in the area. He isn't a surgeon so a good choice instead of a doc who's quick with the scalpel. MRI shows knee has to be replaced but timing...

    Looking for vest recommendations

Looking to get an insulated vest. Seems like everyone has down vests. I'm looking for synthetic insulation. Like the idea of down, but don't they have to be dry cleaned? Thanks

    Looking for Women's softshell

Looking for a women's Large softshell for my wife. Should have started looking a few months ago, but thought someone here might have recommendations. Searches for women's softshells unfortunately seem to turn up ones more focused on appearance vs functionality. Looking for one with very thin...

Limmer Boots - Free to a good home

In the 80's stopped in to meet with Limmer who took my measurements. They were ready a few months later. I liked them so well I ordered a second pair. They've been sitting in our closet, unused other than worn a few times on grassy soccer fields. It would be great to have someone who'll use...

Thanks for a terrific idea - using zip ties to keep MSR heel strap in place, Tim. Nice to discover you know stuff beside I.T. :D

Pack bag - covered by warranty or not?

I have a Gregory bag - humongous size, designed to carry a large pack. I've used it for years as a travel bag to carry stuff for hiking trips out west. Only used on vacations to ferry clothing, daypack gear as checked luggage. Gotta be 20-25 years old. Over the last 6-7 years the interior...

Garmin 60CSX no longer recognized by Windows 10 computer

Rehabbing from ankle surgery, I haven't had the chance to take the GPS out for a walk in quite a while. Returning home yesterday I attempted to download a track and the computer wouldn't recognize the device. Garmin customer service had no answer other than switching to Base Camp to download to...

    Garmin 60CSx showing incorrect altitude

My 7 year old otherwise very accurate Garmin 60CSx has been showing inaccurate altitude numbers. I've noticed it the last 18 months so it may have been going on longer. When the unit was less than a year old it was having difficulty 'finding' satellites when used on consecutive hikes in widely...

slide show venues in Boston - NE area ?

I'm working on a new slide presentation, titled 'The Mountains are Beautiful - Everywhere'. Some really talented photographer-hikers have contributed photos and it will feature images from the northeast mountains, UT, AZ, CO, Sierras, NZ, Patagonia, Alps. I'm hoping the presentation will be an...

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

Reading this made me wonder about a few of my own beliefs. Like many, I've felt motorized traffic has a worse impact on creatures than hikers. And the impact hikers make is more transitory. Should we should consider closing trails to allow the wild creatures time to live more naturally? Should...
