    Sugarloaf Tower Collapse

https://www.wmtw.com/article/wind-topples-tower-on-sugarloaf-summit-update1/26529869 Some of the ME peaks had the highest winds I've experienced while hiking. I remember trying to steer clear of that tower while hiking in winter due to ice fall potential.

    Giant & RPR 4/29/17

Hiked from Chapel Pond via ridge trail. Good conditions down low, decent snow/ice above upper trail junction, with monorail in earnest above 4000'. Out and back to RPR had decent snow above 4k as well. Microspikes made it easier, but you had to walk on rocks with them. Snowshoes came along for...

    Scramble Free 52 WAV

My hiking partner recovering from a recent back injury; while walking and hiking is fine, scrambling is not. We have a tradition of hiking on Thanksgiving, but our go-to peaks are the 48, and Monadnock. Does anyone have any specific 52 WAV recommendations where there is a chance for a good...

    Glacier NP Must See Recommendations

Edit 8/9/15 - Adding some mid-trip answers to my own question Hi Everyone, Planning a trip to Glacier in a few weeks and I have a few questions: 1) Is there anything that is a "must see" that is a little off the beaten path? We currently have the following hikes scheduled: * Siyeh Pass *...

    2014-02-15: Abraham - Attempt

Broke trail all day until ~1900-2000 feet before we decided to turn around. Slow progress was disheartening (breaking trail through 18" of powder from the previous week from the trailhead until our turn around point 5 miles in was exhausting). However; the main reason we threw in the towel was...

South America Trip Recommendations (Machu Pichu)

Planning a trip to South America to do Machu Pichu via the Inca Trail. Looking for other recommendations for additional activities while "in the area". Other than wanting to do Machu Pichu I have not looked into it very much, but friends are planning a trip to South America and (in addition to...

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

Hi Everyone, We're going with a large group to Baxter in the next few weeks (staying at Roaring Brook, Chimney Pond, and Daicy Pond). We have our pulks all constructed (and mildly tested), so far our biggest lesson learned is that weight in pulks are still weight and you can't go crazy bringing...

    Reddington 12/27, Saddleback 12/28

Reddington: Broke trail both ways. Snowshoes all day, CVR closed at paved road. Saddleback: Climbed via ski area, attained summit before being chased off ridge by 60mph winds (measured on hand held aneometer). Ski area staff very friendly, check in with ski patrol prior to climbing.

12/15/12 - Sawteeth, Gothics, Armstrong, UWJ

Conditions: treacherous! Route: Lake Road, Weld Trail, ST, Pyramid, Gothics, Range Trail, Arm, UWJ, Wedge Brook, East River, Lake Road. Equipment Required: Crampons, microspikes/light traction won't do. Crampons required most of the day, light traction used between 2000-3500' but really if...

    No good deed goes un-punished

Back in late August (8/26/12) we were on Jackson for the last mountain in our pressie traverse when we met 2 ladies with a dog at the summit. They were novice hikers (their gear indicated a general lack of hiking experience) but they were in good spirits and very nice (nice enough to take our...

    4 Season List (Gridiot) Question

I'm foolishly working on my 46x4 however, 2 weekends from now I'm running into a bit of a conundrum as the equinox is on Saturday (specifically it is at ~10:40 AM). I know the W48 rules specifically state that a hike must begin no earlier than the precise winter solstice and end no later than...

    8/26/12 Presi Traverse

Due to some amazing generosity from a friend, Nicole and I were able to attempt a presi traverse. We left the parking lot at 5:15. The climb up to Madison Hut was slow and steady, we kept a slow and steady pace to conserve our energy for the rest of the traverse. At the hut we knew we already...

    Single Car Pressie Traverse Logistics

I'm considering trying a pressie traverse next week, but we'll only have 1 car in the area. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get back to Appalachia from the highland center at the end of a long day? I'm planning on starting around 5 AM, we did a GRT in the Adirondacks in 14:30, so I...

Isolation via Rocky Branch & Engine Hill BW 3/10/11

Conditions: Wore microspikes up until the bushwhack and then changed into snowshoes for the remainder of the hike until the completion of the bushwhack on the way back out. Broke through 4-6 inches of blown in snow along the bushwhack, Isolation trail, and Davis path. Some groups couldn't find...
