Wow, this a trip report for the books!

Hah, I was considering posting but figured you'd self-identify if you wanted to be connected to it. Second favorite trip report (behind the late lamented "complete punter's guide to succeeding or not on the West Buttress")

Trail Runners Rescued from Mt Lafayette

In practice the operational definition of "recklessness" emerges from case law and it's whatever you can convince a jury. The law is, frankly, a whole lot less black-and-white, clear-cut than people would like: it's not just the written language but all the case law "in the same tradition"...

    Chocurua rescue

The woman from Los Alamos appears to have an MIT affiliation. (The only connection I have is that I've probably been in the swimming pool at the same time as her.) My guess is grad students taking a weekend out...it's why I'm here! So no restrictions to go to NH, but would be restrictions to go...

Winter Camping / Platforms in Mass

I haven't seen any updates that the Mass closure of AT tentsites has been lifted, although since winter usage isn't heavy they may have decided not to say anything one way or the other.

    Moosehead Ski Area Proposal

While I'm wearing my pedantic Canadian rail geek hat, I should also note MMA/CMQR is former CP not former CN, and now reacquired by CP.

    Moosehead Ski Area Proposal

They've been pushing ads into my Facebook feed for months advertising "direct access to Maine ports!" (Searsport) and showing a line directly east from south-central New Hampshire to Maine. I'm pretty sure they have no track in NH (all PanAm/Guilford, now CSX) and any route that touches their...

A rescue and near rescue on Mt Washington

The person wallowing was the trail runner; singular they. It doesn't sound like the climbers ultimately needed assistance.

Mask mandate on Federal property, including WMNF

This is pretty similar to the statewide mandate that was already in effect.

boiling water in winter with canister stove

The directions for my Whisperlite (~12 years old, and neither part of the name is true) say "A brief soccer-ball sized flame is normal."

Tuckerman's Accident - Two Hikers fall/slide 500 plus over the lip

Cutler River drainage in winter, so USFS is responding agency, not NHFG. I don't think USFS has a policy of charging for rescue.

    Winter Camping Revisited

You've seen my setup in the field. I have an 85L Osprey something-or-other (Aether? Probably aether.) I got a -20 REI-branded down bag that was pretty reasonably priced to start with, then on sale, then dividend...only way I could afford it in grad school, that's for sure. Anything below 0 in a...

Klem All the Carters (arguable with Dome, and of course with Hight right there) Dorset

Help Me Pick New Winter Boots

The Bridgers are what we recommend in the AMC Boston winter hiking program for anybody who doesn't want the Toundras for whatever reason. The Toundras are "big and burly" by normal boot standards but I wouldn't say particularly so by solid winter boot standards....they're less chunky than my...

Any experience with an Atlas SnowShoe Authorized Repair center?

Which repair center did you work with? I have a heel strap that broke off and needs replacing and was dragging my feet because I didn't want to pay to ship the whole thing. If they can send parts for me to do it at home, that makes my life a lot happier.

TY Gagne's new book is out (Spoiler Alert!)

Steve said he'll list it once he has them in stock; there were definitely printing delays.

    NH Mask Mandate in Effect

I've used a Buff for most of the summer, easy to pull up when passing people and provides a little protection. Fold it over for two layers and it's pretty good. I did the Twins last week wearing a two-layer (Burgeon) mask the whole time except eating and it went fine, although it was certainly...

    Ice Gulch Randolph Tuesday Rescue

It goes into the SAR fund which funds equipment, training, etc. I don't know if the OT budget for the COs comes out of that or not. This case aside (which I'm not going to evaluate), I personally have no objection to getting the call before things have hit the point of completely tapped out. If...

    Take Me To GPS School

I suspect it's possible the SD card was damaged. It's also possible the internal memory was damaged, although seems less likely. You can try popping the SD card into another reader and see what's on there. I'm also happy to help in person, drop a PM.

    Rain Gloves

Not "fairly inexpensive", but I use Ourdoor Research Revel mitts. Haven't used them a lot (I don't hike a lot in 30 degree rain) but they definitely do the trick. Was on the 'cats yesterday and Adams certainly looked spicy from that end.

    Owls Head river crossings...

The brook gets pretty braided in there with plenty of tributaries, lots of "do I cross this one or follow the bank?" Probably depends on how much rain lately (and maybe it's easier out than in), but I find Black Pond to be more straightforward.
