Waterville Valley Nordic pass required for Livermore Rd.?

If we want to ski up (and back down, duh) the Livermore road to the Scaur Ridge trail for a hike of the Tripyramids, do we need a Waterville Valley nordic day pass? And, what's the parking situation at the Livermore TH? Thanks for any help -- Matt

We Did It! 48 Finish on Carrigain, Saturday 3/16/13

They say a picture is worth a thousand words ... which may be hyperbole, but even so, our ten-minute musical slide show will have to stand in for all the trip reports we didn't write over the last four years! ;) Thanks to everyone here for all the encouragement, trail conditions, and warm...

    Ski approach to Signal Ridge?

Hi -- so, assuming decent cover, is it reasonable to suppose that a couple of competent but not brillliant nordic skiers on ordinary touring gear could make it in past the end of the Sawyer River Rd. to the where the climb actually starts (~1.7 mile in)? We'd love to do half of the 14 miles on...

Haul a Pulk Up Rocky Branch Tr. ?

Hi -- Just thinking about ways to do Isolation later on this winter ... I know SOP is pretty much to daytrip in & out, but I was wondering about hauling a pulk in, doing the Engine Hill bushwhack and setting up camp somewhere in the back of the valley to make an overnight of it. With the...

    Hunger via Waterbury Trail 1/26/13

Hard packed track & ice, with a few old postholes. We used microspikes from car to summit & back today. Not much need for snowshoes right now, nor enough cover to use them without damage. Light traction important currently -- plenty of ice flows on the trail, and more to come with this week's...

Jefferson, Adams & Madison for 38-39-40, Fri 10/26/12

So ... I know I don't post much, but this hike felt like a pretty big deal. It seems like yesterday Isidora was climbing her first big mountains, and here we are a few years later closing in on 48. I've been holding at 46 (just Isolation & Carrigain left) so we can finish together. We're both...

    Hell Brook>Adam's Apple>Chin>Cliff>Lakeview>Canyon>North>Extension>P rofanity>LT

Hell Brook>Adam's Apple>Chin>Cliff>Lakeview>Canyon>North>Extension>P rofanity>LT All trails well kept: brushed, drained, and free of blowdown. Slow going out there ... lotta squirming through cracks and holes, up and down over collosal boulders. Eight miles = 12 hours

    Worcester Mtn. 3/6/12

Lower trail is pretty chopped up with moose tracks; the holes abate after about 3/4 mile in. Nice snowshoe track now leads to the summit snowfields (actually, to the summit, but that will only last until the next wind). Deep snow up there ... Equipment used: snowshoes & poles, the whole way...

    Hunger (Waterbury Tr) 2/4/12

Snow over hard ice, 2-4" at the bottom to ~1' closer to the top. Traction aids essential. We were on full crampons and it was not overkill. Snowshoes not needed.

    Whiteface via Beaver Meadow->Whiteface->LT 12/29/11

Owing to the sub -50 wind chills this morning we changed our above-treeline plans and went for this more sheltered hike instead. Glad we did, as even in the trees the winds forced us to bundle up pretty tight. There is new snow, ~5" at the trailhead and more like 10" at the top, drifted in...

Hunger Mtn. via Waterbury Trail 12/18/11

Ice, ice, and more ice. Light traction very important, IMO. We saw some folks barebooting today, but it was a decidedly treacherous thing to attempt. My son wore microspikes from start to finish. I had the choice of full crampons or nothing, so I wore them above the waterfall and barebooted...

Cheap lodging in the Whiteface / Passaconoway area?

Any suggestions? Daughter & I are thinking of doing the loop this week; it would be nice to spend the previous night over there & save ourselves the long drive in the morning. Don't want to spend a fortune. Any thoughts? We could stay at the OH cabin in Jackson, but if there's something...

East Osceola from the Kanc 11/6/11

Long story short, plenty of ice & snow. Light traction very helpful. Saw people moving around today on everything from trail runners to full crampons; I'd call microspikes the vehicle of choice if you've got the option. One duck-under blowdown to negotiate, and three or four spots where the...

trail conditions on East Osceola from Greeley Ponds?

I was thinking of a quick out & back tomorrow from the Kanc. I've never done this route & I know it's said to be very steep and sometimes icy. Any sense of how things are in there right now? We have traction & are generally comfortable on winter trails, but don't want to go if it's going to...

LT Eden Crossing - Spruce Ledge Camp Sun 10/23/11

Nothing too strange going on ... most blowdowns have been cleared post-Irene, but there is one big, complicated one with multiple spring-loaded pinned trees involved about 3/4 mile up from 118 that necessitates a short bushwhack around. Trail is slippery with wet rocks & mud under deep layer...

Davis Neighborhood & LT to Butternut Mtn. 9/25

Treadway generally OK post-Irene, with a few minor wet spots. Two good-sized trunks down across the DNT between the state land gate and the LT, and three or four good-sized whole blowdown hardwood canopies blocking the LT between Corliss Camp and the summit of Butternut Mtn. Otherwise, trail...
