You never know who might be on the trail

Ten Essentials Let's see, the "ten essentials": 1. Nuclear missile launch codes. What else would be on that list?

Wonderful I simply loved hearing her tell of her accomplishment and it was wonderful to hear the pride in her voice. (Way to go MOM!) - Solitary

    Practicing Survival Techniques

Yes Yes, I routinely try out new equipment (stoves, sleeping bags, tents) in the backyard. Not just for survival practice, but just general use. Who wants to be struggling with unfamiliar equipment or a new technique in the cold, dark, wet and 10 miles from a trailhead?

Latest and greatest or "old friends"

Climbing and insulation I routinely replace my climbing ropes for safety's sake and always after a fall. The old ones become tree swings, utility ropes in the garage and I even built a rope bridge over a gully in the woods with the girl scouts. Didn't take a picture of it, however, and when I...

Is GPS just a 'Stupid Guy Thing?'

Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it That was me trying to stop myself from getting involved in this thread, but I can't help it. Speaking as a hiker who also happens to be female, I don't think GPS is a stupid guy thing. I do a fair amount of bushwhacking//off-trail hiking and I know how to...

    Daypack follow-up- ventilated or not

Key Point This is the key point for me. If I'm moving, I'm sweating. And I have yet to see the miracle fabric or pack design that prevents my back from getting completely soaked. So I put my emphasis on wearing a wicking fabric for a shirt - I don't use cotton t-shirts even in summer - and a...

Guns in National Parks: The Trailer

Decisions, decisions This is a tough one. For about the same price I could get an Old Town Rockport 14 canoe ... canoe ... or a Glock 23 .40 caliber with 13 round magazine and still have some money left over to put towards a laser sight. Glock What SHOULD I do????

    N.J. climbers explore lesser-known mountains, hard-to-reach peaks

Elevation snobbery I was amused by this bit of the article: "The magic number for most peakbagging lists is about 4,000 feet, like the Adirondack 46, named for the number of peaks, and the New Hampshire 48. For comparison’s sake, New Jersey’s High Point soars to 1,803 feet. “We’ve called it...

Losing Weight and Getting into Shape

And the winner is... So reading the Nashua Telegraph article about Farmer's Winter 48 record breaking hike, several of us noticed this: Welts began hiking two years ago to lose weight. When that wasn’t happening quickly enough, he began running and then running mountains. Since then, he has...

    Long Trail in the winter

Not in one winter that I know of, but... Here's an excerpt from the "about the author" of Don't Die On the Mountain by Dan H. Allen. "The author hiked to the top of Mt. Monadnock when he was two, and he backpacked with his parents to a shelter in the White Mountains of New Hampshire when he...

    Product Review: Kahtoola MICROspikes

No flames from me (... or photon torpedoes ... or whatever the shields are for). I don't agree with you, but if I just wanted to hear an echo of my own opinions, I'd talk into a tape recorder. Of all the things that have been mentioned on this thread, the two that sell me on microspikes are 1)...
