    Anyone have ACL issues?

I'm a bit late to this discussion but I have had multiple knee surgeries (torn ACL & medial meniscus). I tore my ACL while descending Mt. Liberty in Feb of 2010. Had surgery to repair it in April 2010 and climbed Mt. Garfield in December of 2010. I had an autograft taken from the same knee...

Wild Things North Conway Closing their doors in North Conway

Back in 08/09 when I read about the company being sold I knew it was only a matter of time. I have a lot of clothing from Wild Things and I have been a customer for a long long time. Their gear works wonderfully well for me and I really enjoyed stopping into the store after a long day out. I...

Winter is over, what did y'all do

I managed to get in only 10 summits this winter :( Some of you may recall that I tore the ACL in my left knee back in Jan of 2010 and that stopped all hiking for winter 2009/2010. Now just over two years later I tear the meniscus in my right knee and my hiking plans get foiled again. If I...

    Mt. Hale

Date of hike - 1/28/12 Took the N. Twin trail to the "trail which will remain nameless". Snow was collapsing under our feet with a "whump" but overall it wasn't too bad. Snowshoes were worn all the way. No need for micro-spikes or anything more.

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Wondering if there have been any updates to this issue. We hiked the Wildcats on the 16th but we got a really late start and descended without issue under the light of our headlamps so our experience may not reflect the current situation.

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

One of my hiking partners called me this morning and said that he spoke with Susan via telephone. Based on what he told me it looks like the big issue is people sledding down the mountain which has the owners of Wildcat concerned. He also said that Susan said she had a letter drafted up that was...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Just wondering if there have been any new developments on this? I may hike in from Carter Notch and down Polecat this weekend. I can see it now, hikers start late and descend Wildcat without a headlamp so as to be as incognito as possible. What a great way to increase the potential for...

Anyone regret buying a NON gore-texed boot?

For 3 season boots I prefer full grain leather sans Gore-Tex. Well maintained leather works perfectly for me. Winter boots are synthetic climbing boots with a Gore-Tex liner.

    Energy drinks.

I use products by Hammer Nutrition and they have been great. The three products I use are Perpetuem, gels and Endurolytes. I typically drink a liter of water mixed with Perpetuem on the way to the trailhead. As the day progresses I pop a couple of Endurolytes to help keep my electrolytes in...

    Lost pole on Crawford Path

A good friend of mine was out yesterday and came upon a couple of hikers in trouble. She assisted the hikers in trouble and while doing so left a single pole behind. The pole was left on the Crawford Path and it's a Black Diamond Flicklock, color is red/silver/black. If anyone happens upon the...

    Mt. Hale 7/1

Mt. Hale via the "west side" Trail was in reasonably good shape with the exception of a few very muddy spots. Ferns were about hip high. All in all a wonderful day to be out enjoying the mountains.

    Eisenhower - 6/4

Eisenhower via Edmands Path - 6/4 Trail in good shape. No blowdowns. No need for any "special" gear. Didn't have much time for hiking today so I only went to the summit and back down. LOTS of people out enjoying the weather/views.

Winter Stats - Tally 'em up!

A mere 5 times out this winter with 3 of those times making the summit. But since I'm still healing from my ACL surgery last April (2010) I'm thankful to be out there in any capacity and I'll take whatever summits I can get. Hopefully next winter I'll be back to my old self strength wise and...

    Cannon

Cannon via Kinsman Ridge from the Tramway lot. Snow conditions were good. Some soft spots up high but nothing to worry about. The last push up the summit from the viewpoint up was somewhat of a mess. Lots of spruce traps and soft snow. The route does not follow the Kinsman Ridge trail proper...
