Stratton Brook Tent Sites in Carrabassett Valley, ME

Just wondering if it's possible to drive to Stratton Brook Tent Sites via Stratton Brook Pond Road or if you have to park and hike there. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Caribou Valley Rd near Carrabassett Valley, ME

A year ago I had planned to hike the Crockers and Mount Redington, but the road to the trail head (Caribou Valley Rd), off of Rt 27, was closed for bridge maintenance. Does anyone know if the road is open now, at least as far as the trail head to the Crockers and Sugarloaf? Any input would be...

    Fishers in the news

Last fall I saw a fisher crossing Maple Street (the main street in downtown Danvers, MA) at about 10:30PM. I had known that they were in the area, but it seemed strange to see it right downtown.

easy 4K where I can see other flags on Flags On The 48

Thanks again everyone. Breeze, I hadn't thought of Wildcat. From there you should be able to see Washington, Adams, Madison and the Carters. Great choice. And I understand your point, SilentCal. Last year we climbed Moosilauke and couldn't see 100 feet through the fog.

Thank you, everyone, for your responses. You've given me lots of options to think about.

easy 4K where I can see other flags on Flags On The 48

My girlfriend and I finished her NH48 last Sept on Mousilauke. Her niece and the niece's boyfriend joined us, and it happened to be Flags On The 48 day. It was a great experience coming up the ridge and seeing the flag up ahead (coincidentally there were GIs up there on maneuvers, which made it...

    Mount Mansfield Loop, 7/17/2010

Great TR BigEarl. You and I have been of the same mindset lately. My girlfriend and I met you last week on Killington, and Saturday we also climbed Mansfield (then Camel's Hump today). We got a later start that you did, but apparently it was lucky that we did, as we had great views when we...

    Wildcats trail conditions?

As of two weeks ago there was over 4 feet of snow at the tower on Wildcat D. The snow was above the railing at the base of the stairs. Likely less now, and I'm not sure about the rest of the ridge. But I would guess that you will encounter at least some snow/ice up there even now.

Snowshoe Racing - shortcut to superfitness?

FWIW there was recently a snowshoe race in Salem, MA that, according to the newspaper, was the largest in New England this winter at over 100 participants. This was the first running of this particular race. Also, I believe there is one annually at the Atkinson Country Club in Atkinson, NH. And...

Fitness for Training Old Farts 55+

God bless you, Mohamed. I hope to stay that active into my 70s too. My Mom is 82 and she still goes to the gym 3 times a week, so I have had a good example all my life. I am 58 and I have been running on and off most of my life. But a few years ago my knees started giving me a bit of trouble. A...

Hiking around Cathedral Ledge in winter

Another short, easy, scenic hike near North Conway is Black Cap off of Hurricain Mountain Road. It's only about 2 miles round trip and it has 360 degree views into Maine to the east, the Pressies to the north, and Mount Cranmore and the Pemi to the west. But before you go you should check to see...

Very cool video. I was in Yellowstone in the fall a few years ago. I'd love to see it in winter.

I was stationed at Aviano from 1972-1976. Maybe I know your Dad. I worked in munitions. What a great place Aviano is. I've been back twice since, but not to hike. I still have Italian friends there who I keep in touch with. Happy New Year, yourself.

What did you do in 2009?

I'm very jealous. I was stationed with the Air Force for 4 years in the 70's in the Dolomites. I skied a lot but I wasn't a hiker back then. I would love to go back and hike there. I completed the NH48 in 2008. My #48 was my girlfriend's #24. So in 2009 we completed her remaining 24 giving me 4...

I had the same thought. Cutting trees willy-nilly in the national forest seems contrary to Leave No Trace.

White Mountain Parking Fee Changes for 2010

I don't mind paying a parking fee if it helps defray the cost of maintanence, even if I don't always agree with certain specific projects. But $30 to stay at Cabot Cabin seems a bit excessive. I don't know who maintains other facilities, but I believe the Boy Scouts from Jefferson, NH maintain...
