Adirondack Winter 46 vs White Mountain 48

Great article today by Carol White about the Adirondack Winter 46 and how they compare to the White Mountain 48. Carol is the "Steve Smith" of the Dacks. http://sectionhiker.com/perils-of-the-adirondack-winter-46-by-carol-white/

Birch Tree Die-Off in the Kilkenny?

But the damage in the Kilkenny was strictly limited to birches. Lots of birch leaves down on the ground too, making me think this is a species specific or insect issue.

Birch Tree Die-Off in the Kilkenny?

I don't recall seeing any young birches. It was mostly big trees that had no leaves, so an old ice storm would make sense.

Birch Tree Die-Off in the Kilkenny?

Maybe - we were a party of 6 doing a full traverse from South Pond to Jefferson.

Birch Tree Die-Off in the Kilkenny?

Backpacking in the Kilkenny over the weekend, I was dismayed that a large percentage of the birch trees are dead or dying. Is there some kind of blight going on? Haven't noticed the same thing down south in the Pemi.

    Direttissima Hikes in the Whites

Hooked up with Mats I hooked up with Mats via email and it sounds like he's the only hiker to complete a WM Direttissima. I'm going to go down to the AMC archives today and poke around to see if I can find any more historic references. I'll probably start with old Appalachia issues.

    Direttissima Hikes in the Whites

I'm trying to dig up some historic information about continuous hikes of the WM 4,000 footers. I found the journal of Mats and MEBs' attempt in 2009 http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=31679 but only a passing reference to another Direttissima by Mats at an earlier date. Does anyone...

Can I carry Microspikes on board my flight ?

Microspikes on Airlines Have you considered wearing them around your neck as jewelry, like a hiker style spiked collar? Seriously, check them or send them ahead in a package using USPS or Fedex.

    Scotland

Canisters In Europe and the UK, canisters can have a bayonet style or screw-in style attachment to a stove. If you call Tiso, make sure you ask which they have. I've seen adapter kits, so you can use either interchangeably, but don't know how well they work. Philip

    Sustainability in the outdoor industry

The sustainability position at Golite is quite sincere - this isn't a greenwashing job. I've gotten to know Kim Coupounas, the co-founder and chief sustainability officer of Golite, since I posted that article. She is spearheading efforts in this area within the Outdoor Industry Association's...

    Bleckhead Range

I love the hike over Thomas Cole, Black Dome and, Blackhead. Backpacking the Escarpment trail is another good option with it's great views of the Blackhead Range and the Hudson valley.
