    Solo Peakbagging %s

How about hitch hiking? I did a Garfield to N Twin traverse this winter and hitch hiked from the end of Haystack Rd to 5 corners. At no point did I even think of considering it as a non-solo hike. Just to throw my thoughts into the mix, solo for me consists of: not making plans with anyone...

    Owl's Head water crossings?

The Franconia Falls whack on the way back is fantastic (during the non snow months) for those not daring enough to attempt missing Black Pond on the way back. Plus the added bonus of coming up behind a sign that says "end of trail" which is surprisingly satisfying after a long day.

I was just thinking the exact same thing myself... Try-po-lee? Not feeling it.

Would you pay for hiker insurance?

Speechless..... (but laughing quite hard) The point has been made though, hiking rescue monies are such a small drop in a big bucket that it shouldn't matter. Just call everything that's not walking on a paved road, "hiking", tack an extra $5 bucks onto our driver's license renewals ($1 per...

Would you pay for hiker insurance?

People are trying to tell me they wouldn't pay $20 bucks a year to hike? Are you serious? You could hike once a month that's less than 2 bucks a day. Totally worth it. Much better value than my crampons and I could just dump those since I paid for insurance....

Do you hike in the dark?

TH to TH in the dark, solo, during winter. Night hiking is awesome and I plan to continue night hiking year round. The trails are surprisingly less crowded...

I would go in a heartbeat. Dangerous? Sure, but isn't that the allure of it?

Latest and greatest or "old friends"

I find I buy a lot of outerwear but it's all slightly different. Hoods, Ventilation, Hard Shell, Soft Shell, etc. I like to have as many options as possible. I have finally hit a saturation point and frequently resist all sorts of stuff on steepandcheap. That being said, I'm a sucker for...

Is GPS just a 'Stupid Guy Thing?'

The following the postholes back out was brilliant :) weighing in for the PRO-GPS crowd.... I carry one, Garmin Dakota 20, the same length and width as a Blackberry Curve, twice as thick, maybe 3 times as heavy. I usually grab a GPS track in the snow if I'm unsure of how broken the trail is...

I had given up hope on this place and then Darren (after about 3 months) finally emailed me last night. No presis today nor tomorrow, I've been in the same situation as you though, but I've got mediocre chairs at best. If the higher summits forecast holds tomorrow I might make a midnight run...

Poll: Do you typically carry overnight gear on a winter 4K dayhike?

I carry an emergency space bivy (tin foil bag), a bunch of hand warmers, extra layers and enough hard shell gear to keep me out of the weather for quite some time. I do carry a reliable GPS so whiteouts don't particularly worry me, sprained ankles can be hiked on and a first aid kit ain't...
