Best Winter Route for Ellen and Abraham

Thanks guys. We had a nice day on Saturday-- up Jerusalem over the Long Trail and down Battell. Car spot was not bad. Spikes all day, as there was a hard crust everywhere and only a few tricky spots with hard ice. Until the next snowfall, no need for snowshoes.

Best Winter Route for Ellen and Abraham

Any advice regarding Battell versus the Long Trail for a traverse of Ellen and Abraham? Both appear to be packed out from trip reports. With the road walk to the LT summer trailhead, Battell appears to be slightly shorter. We will be headed back to Jericho VT afterwards and head in via the...

Great Day for a Presi 6/20/15

Hmm-- We must have run into you at some point (Maybe I passed you at the very end?) I was leading a group of 9 on the traverse for AMC Boston, but I ran ahead with one other person at the end to try to get to Fabians before it closed. We were down about 9:50 ish. The end of our group made it...

    AMC Boston Winter Hiking Program

Totally understand Tuck. Keep an eye on www.outdoors.org to see if the Boston Chapter Above Treeline Workshop gets listed for general registration. I also believe that the NH Chapter may have a weekend devoted to advanced techniques, although I can't tell you much about the details.

    AMC Boston Winter Hiking Program

Good question Tuck. Yes. The Boston Chapter has two Above Treeline Workshops where participants learn ice axe and cramponing techniques and practice them and self-arrest on a Saturday then climb Washington via Lion's Head on Sunday. Really a great weekend. I totally recommend. Spaces are...

    AMC Boston Winter Hiking Program

Many of us have been hiking for years in all 4 seasons. But for many newer hikers, getting out in winter is intimidating. The Boston AMC hosts a great Winter Hiking program with 5 classes about layering, gear, boots, weather analysis, safety etc and 19 different trips for budding winter hikers...

    Water on the Davis Path

Thanks JCarter and Maine guy! What about this from Summitpost? Once at your destination of Mt Isolation, the nearest water is a tiny but reliable stream that crosses Davis Path about half a mile south of Mt Isolation's summit.

    Water on the Davis Path

I'm planning a backpack from Glen Boulder south to 302 via the Davis Path for mid October. I searched old threads and came up with conflicting information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 1) I read about references to a spring on Mt Davis-- is this fictional? 2) The resolution shelter...

Beta needed for bushwhacking Owls Head from the North

Thanks Chris! Yup, that's the line we were looking at (although I am an advisor not a participant, as I'm heading to CA in a few days for some family time and then hiking/backpacking in Sequoia/Kings Canyon.) And thanks too, Peakbagger!

Beta needed for bushwhacking Owls Head from the North

Upon repeating the search with different spellings, I did come up with one thread from 2005, which indicated that it could be done but was quite thick. Anyone tried it?

Beta needed for bushwhacking Owls Head from the North

Hey folks, My friend Mike Henrick wants a gentler descent from Owls Head than the slide or Brutus. Has anyone tried to bushwhack down the northwest ridge or up from thirteen falls? I did a search and didn't come up with anything, which surprised me. Any beta would be appreciated. Thanks!

Convertible pants vs side-zip rain pants?

I often wear my side zip rain pants over shorts in summer if it's rainy and cold or I'm at camp and I need bulletproof bug protection. I recently tried a bunch of different ones and much prefer mountain hardwear to marmot precips. Sierra Trading Post has prior year Mountain Hardwear models super...
