    Snow Free Trails 2014

The Uncanoonucs are snow-free. We took the kids up there yesterday--beautiful hike (minus the concrete jungle at the top). A little bit of mud but nothing out of the ordinary for April.

Highwater Trail vs. Wild River Trail

Last summer there was a considerable stretch of washout on the Wild River trail. If memory serves me right it's about 3 miles from the campground to Black Angel and the middle section is where the washout is. I don't know if it has been repaired. Something to keep in mind. :)

    Sunday storm ... power outages

Definitely, there are great benefits from a system with a single point of failure. :) I'm certainly not suggesting new lines currently need run in that area.

    Sunday storm ... power outages

I'd bet those power lines along 49 are the only ones that service Waterville Valley. Any damage and it's probably going to be 100% outage downstream (towards town).

    REI Changes Its Warranty Policy

I wouldn't be surprised if LLBean follows suit sooner or later. I have a relative that works in their service department and she tells me that people abuse their return policy as well. :(

Tough Day on Wildcat Ridge, 6/1/2013

I had a similar issue on the same mountain (Black Angel trail) last July. It was about 100 degrees and I was clearly overheating and my body didn't want to keep going. I didn't want to turn the group around so I stayed there for a few hours and rested. I would have felt extremely awful if I had...

    Slides On The Tripyramids

In dry, summer conditions, I don't think protection would be necessary. Ymmv, but if you've done Flume, Whiteface (I assume Blueberry Ledge) and Huntington comfortably then you won't find it any more difficult than Flume, or any more exposed than Huntington. The bottom half of the slide is...

    Peregrine falcon webcam

Here's another falcon cam, from the building I used to work at in downtown Manchester (1750 Elm). http://www.spectraaccess.com/?page_id=494 Side story: One day I was eating lunch out on the patio under the nest and someone from the audubon came up with one of the babies in his hand. He had a...

Is there a map of Acadia with trail mileage distances on it?

I have a National Geographic map (#212 for Acadia) that I got from EMS that has the mileage listed in the key, but not next to each trail. I know some people prefer the latter. It has all the road details in addition to foot paths. You also get Isla au Haut and the Schoodic Peninsula on the flip...

Looks like a major solar upgrade and new roof at Greenleaf Hut

From the picture, it seems they ran the bitchathane the full length of the roof. I don't blame them considering the locale. ;) Can't tell from the picture but I can assume the did it up right and over top of the metal flashing in the gutters. I bet the sub roof outlasts the shingles. :D Kudos...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

I'd say an unbiased opinion would probably be better than hearsay in this matter. Especially an assessment coming from rocket21, who has some pretty extensive trail maintenance experience.
