Water Filters: Squeeze vs Pump vs Gravity

I used a Sawyer Squeeze on my thruhikes as a gravity feed setup and it worked incredibly well. I carry a 70oz platypus bag with a string attatched to the end points. I will the bag with raw water, hang it from a tree or even my pack and let it drip directly into my two empty gatorade bottles...

    Edmunds Col Fatality

Very sad, my heartfelt condolences to his family & friends. Slightly off topic but worth mentioning, a couple people have mentioned wearing a helmet while hiking icy trails. A climbing helmet is specifically designed to protect from items falling from above. A cycling helmet would be more...

Beware! Giant Hogweed at Dry River Shelter #2

Wow - they appear identical other than the size, are there other identifying traits to notice?

Beware! Giant Hogweed at Dry River Shelter #2

While hiking Isolation yesterday, we visited the Dry River Shelter #2 where I was horrified to see a patch of Giant Hogweed (Heracleum Mantegazzianum) growing less than ten feet from the shelter opening. Giant Hogweed is a NASTY toxic plant - the sap causes huge blisters and permanent scarring...

    Smallest lightest bear canister

I rented a Wild Ideas Bearikade for my PCT hike. They come on two sizes, and are made of carbon fiber - they weigh almost a pound less that the other canister-style options. Highly recommended, but pretty expensive to buy.

    Sphinx Trail question

I remember one spot where the trail & stream are one and you could possibly veer off course but otherwise it's pretty straightforward.

    Bemis Stream Trail closure

Just a heads up - the Bemis Stream Trail is closed for the remainder of the season due to extensive logging operations. This trail parallels the AT, offering an opportunity for a loop hike. Please help pass this information on to other hikers.

    Grafton Loop Trail Rescue

As I have stated many times on this forum we could REALLY use help maintaining the Grafton Loop Trail. The MATC is a wonderful group of people dedicated to maintaining trails - please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about what is involved. It's fun & extremely rewarding!

    Rocky Branch trail work?

This has been the official notice for quite a while now - I spoke to someone at the WMNF Saco Ranger Station this week and the unofficial word is that they are working on it, and it should be reopened by the end of the summer.

    Grafton Notch, ME?

I maintain the section of the east loop from The Lane campsite to the third crossing of Wright Brook. As an update, I know that Long Mountain was cleared last week and I am going to be spending several days next week clearing from East Baldpate down to The Lane, a section that hasn't had an...

    Rocky Branch trail work?

Wondering if anyone here knows the status of the closed section of the Rocky Branch Trail (between Stairs Col and the #2 Shelter) - I thought I had read somewhere that there were plans to repair it this summer but haven't found anything more.

ATC asking thru hikers to register

Wow - I clearly stand corrected! I have been following this issue and hadn't seen this decision, I had heard about the possibility of two separate ADZPCTKO dates and a voluntary start date registration system. Personally, I think this is a very good idea - although I loved attending the KO (I...

ATC asking thru hikers to register

Just to clarify, there is no usage cap on the PCT. PCT hikers are required to carry a (free) permit, but mine was never checked - although as you mentioned, in the JMT section there is occasional enforcement. I believe that the potential impact of "Wild" on the PCT is WAY overblown in regards...
