After all that, my dog sitter (AKA my daughter) bailed on me and I cant do Saturday or Monday  If I had gone I was leaning toward switching to a long Carrigain hike to stay below tree line (mostly). Please post how you made out Fuzzy

    Improving Hike Safe Card

All good points (reminder and 12 month from purchase), you should write to someone and suggest this. Personally I did not receive a reminder but did get an email with a pdf of the card when I applied for a new one for 2018.

    Planning Monroe attempt.

Not very encouraging. Hey, even a partial attempt is better than sitting home. Last time (only time) I did Monroe (not official winter) there was waist high drifts too as I recall. If there is no trail broke out I won't last long anyway. If I quit early I can always swing over to Lincoln and...

    Planning Monroe attempt.

Unfortunately I agree with the previous posts suggesting I bring crampons. I recall the section after the pool being steep enough that it may not hold snow. Hillsound-pro's will have to do, have never picked up full crampons.

    Planning Monroe attempt.

I'll be waiting with anticipation for you to pass me and start breaking trail. If I go Sat it will be early by headlamp but you will be certain to pass me. Look for red RI Tacoma in lot.

    Planning Monroe attempt.

I’m thinking about making an attempt at Monroe up ammo either Saturday or Monday. (1 of 4 remaining peaks on my NH4KW list). Weather/temp wise I’d prefer Monday but may not be able to. I am trying to go as light as I can safely. Would my assumption that snowshoes would be okay for the entire...

Big difference in snow totals from last weeks storm

Twin Way from z cliff to at least z spur will probably be hard to follow. Monday it was barley broken out by two hikers Sunday and then me on Monday. Spur to Z mt had no sign of trail at all - went down 1' - 2' with each step. From Highway to hut to Z cliff well packed Monday from 28 hut guest...

    Winter (slack pack?) up wildcat

Cell coverage was good at least for top half of slope. Great day for a hike less cloudy than predicted and no wind. . Should have stuck with plan of slack packing. Carried way too much gear and after several falls skiing down admitted to myself that I could not ski on the icy conditions with...

    Winter (slack pack?) up wildcat

Hi all, it’s been a while since I posted. Didn’t hike or walk much this summer after cracking three ribs when I dumped my bike. Planned on hitting some winter peaks in December but I hurt my knees falling out of a tree putting up lights. Ready to give it a try now – probably Saturday. Figured...

    Blowdowns

Slightly off topic; Has anyone been on blackpond trail this winter ( on the way to BP bushwhack) and come across any significant blow-downs? I cleared them in Nov and would like to know what to expect when I come up next time for trail work.

Recomendations for the Carters and Wildcats this weekend

JDL was meant to be "Joe Dodge Lodge" at the Pinkham Notch visitor center. I spelled it out in the original post then TJ used JDL in a response so I figured it was an accepted acronym. Thanks for info on other bus, I'll have to check that out. Yes I did have a great weekend, wish I could have...

Recomendations for the Carters and Wildcats this weekend

Great weekend. Yes, Tim, 19 mile brook was the best choice Friday. Two hikers tried Imp to M. Carter Saturday and had to turn back and come up 19 mile after trying to break trail to M. Carter. I stayed at the C-N hut Friday did Carter Dome and S. Carter Saturday. Trail to Hight not visible...

Recomendations for the Carters and Wildcats this weekend

I like the idea of dropping weight at the hut before the Carters but that would be a very long hike for me. I'm going to take it one step further and add a day to my trip; Bus up thursday, Hike to the hut friday (short hike but I also have a 5 mile road hike on 16). Try as many Carters as I can...

Recomendations for the Carters and Wildcats this weekend

I’m planning my first and only winter hike this year for this coming weekend. I’m hoping to repeat a hike I did in October four years ago ( http://1slowhiker.blogspot.com/2012_10_09_archive.html ) doing the Carters and Wildcats with an overnight at the Carter- Notch hut. I have a...

WMNF Parking Fee Increase Proposal Jan 30,2017 Comment Deadline

Bob: So how does that work at the THs, do just leave it visible on your dash. Do you know if the visitor center at Lincoln sells the senior passes?

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

FYI , with the SPOT mounted on my shoulder strap in the winter I am able to send signals by pressing the buttons with the pointy end of the grip on my hiking stick.

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

How much faster does the tracking wear down batteries. I've thought of paying for this but not if it drains the Li batteries fast. I use the OK button for "Im on the trail" and send a signal every hour or so. I use the custom msg button for "I am either at a trailhead or at a...
