    Lauky's last hike

Ed, I am so very sorry to hear of Lauky's passing. Reading your trip reports over the years gave me a glimpse into the bond you shared together along miles of trails and they fed my passion for hiking with my four pawed pal, Simon. Forever in your heart. Tracy & Simon

    Franconia Ridge Knife Injury

No need to have been rescued if he had not stabbed himself while slashing limbs. I did not mean to open a can of worms debating the merit or not of recouping rescue monies. I think I was bing more sarcastic than anything... should have added an emoticon or kept my fingers off the key board...

    Franconia Ridge Knife Injury

I was surprised they did not even mention the limb cutting in the article. Instances like this make an argument for collecting $$$ for rescues.

    Hiking partner

Hi, I am on the slower side as well and do not like large groups. Mostly I hike alone, well, with my dog, but it might be nice to meet up with fellow mellow hikers. I live in Maine, so may not be easy to coordinate.

CAUTION for people who hike with dogs

I am so very sorry to learn of your faithful friend's most tragic death. My yellow lab, Simon, has an ok response to 'leave it'- thank you for the stark reminder that he and I need to do some refresher practice. Thank you also for the tip about poisoning, awful to think of the harm of what I...

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

I prefer to hike with my dog and do so about 99% of the time. I started hiking solo because I worried about being too slow for other people. Despite many miles on the trail that worry continues, so it is a great thing that I have a wonderful dog who enjoys hiking adventures as much as I do!
