Very Rare The very rare and seldom seen North Country Ananconda?

    BC Skins

Kicker Skins Unless your planning to skin up some of the steeper slides, I've found kicker skins to be all that's need the vast majority of the time. I have both Asecension Kicker and full skins, hardly ever use the full skins

    4 Corners (AZ/NM/CO/UT) info?

I agree With many of the other posters, Mesa Verde is well worth the visit. Durango is a neat town. You'll also be pretty close to Canyonlands NP, did some really nice day hikes there a few years back. Nice weather this time of year.

    Northern Lights

Lk Champlain I've seen them on numerous ocassions over the past 25 or 30 years from our camp on Lake Champlain, Essex Co. NY. Most often in the late summer thru late fall. Of course I'm not up there much in the winter.

Ski Warm-Up Suggestions Prior To Marcy

Other suggestions Sounds like you are on the right path, routes you've done are all good intros to and prep for Marcy. Whales Tail is a good one, also in that same area is the Wright Peak ski trail. You might want to also give the Whiteface Mt. Toll Rd a try. Lower end of the Jackrabbit...

    Whiteface Mt. Memorial Hwy-1/31/09

Skied the highway on Sat. morning, very cold and windy, fairly decent track set by previous skiers. Most of the way, it was a few inches of powder on top of a nice firm base. Deep drifts and almost bare spots in a few of the exposed places. The Lake Placid turn had everything from bare pavement...

    Too cold to hike?

Adjust I'll adjust my plans, probably do a lower elevation snowshoe or back country ski route.

    What to drive in winter

Tire Rotation . Sure, if you had a problem with one or even two of the tires, but with regular tire rotation, and maintaining proper tire pressure, the tires should wear evenly and all 4 would be replaced at the same time, so shouldn't be an issue. It will be interesting for me to see how the...

    What breed of dog?

A Westie would be a good choice. We have two females, the bigger one goes around 24 lbs (about as big as they get), the smaller one weighs about 18 lbs. Great companion dogs, loyal, affectionate, pretty gentle, don't shed. As their name implies, they were bred as field dogs for the West...

    Bear Grylls Big Phony

Story making the rounds in the news, not suprising. In the several episodes I watched, I found some of the methods he used rather stange to say the least. In one, he jumps off a 30 ft. cliff into a Class IV river and recommends floating down to civilzation...

Finch Pruyn sale to be decided on 4/24

Keep watching Sorry for the cliche, but this could be one of those win-win situations. Blue Wolf - Atlas Holdings continue to operate the mill, 800+ people keep their jobs. Some key parcels of land are sold to NYS and put into the Forest Preserve. Development rights and conservation easements...

The Future of Telemark is now

Unclear Maybe I missed it in the Telemarktalk article. Will these new bindings still work with older 3-pin boots or do will you need to buy a whole new boot-binding system. I have 3 pairs of very serviceable boots (1 leather, 2 plastic) and am not about to invest in a 4th pair. I think that...

Google Earth Satellite Views of the Mtns.

New York Imagery For locations in New York State, see the link to the state's GIS Clearinghouse interactive map. New York overflew the whole state over the past couple of years, so it is pretty recent stuff. The state paid for 3M resolution, but counties had the option to pay for an updgrade to...

    Back Country Slides?

WF Auto Road Unless the conditions are really hard packed/icy most sections of the Whiteface Auto Road aren't steep enough to build up enough speed to really link tele turns.

    doggie's in winter?

I take my West Highland Terrier on XC, Backcountry and snowshoe day trips. No high peaks, but she has done Hadley, Bald Peak, etc. with me. She's also gone on 10 -12 mile ski trips over rolling terrain. Terries were bred to be field dogs in the less than ideal weather of the Scottish Higlands...

anyone been to Thatcher Park(near albany)

Was up at Thacher Park on Monday, pretty boney. Did the trails you mentioned off of Beaver Dam Rd. Had to stay to the grassy trails and slopes. No base, often went right thru the new snow (4-6 inches) to the dirt. Haven't skied Partridge Run yet this year, imagine a little thin there too

    Black Bear Range Expanding?

Perhaps it is more a case of the bears RESTABLISHING their range. I seem to recall reading sometime that in pre-Columbian times, black bears were pretty much ubiquitous in what is now the US and southern Canada
