    Shenandoah National Park

I'm going to be spending a week in Shenandoah National Park in August. I have never been there and would love any recommendations for day hikes. I'll be staying in a cabin right in the park and I believe I'll have access to most trails. This being one of the few national parks that allow dogs...

    Summer shuttle

Does anyone know if the shuttles that run between trailheads allow dogs to ride along.

    Guns on the trail

When I see a hunter going off with a rifle I understand he is hunting and has a purpose for his gun. A policeman puts on a gun for a purpose. When I see a hiker carrying a gun it is the lack of purpose that makes me nervous. I hike solo most of the time and have never been afraid - of other...

    Guns on the trail

After reading about the misadventure of the young man on Mt. Adams and the following story several days later about a hiker finding the gun that had been lost in the fall - I started wondering how many hikers actually carry a firearm while hiking. A couple of years ago I ran into a man on Mt...

    Camera Suggestions

I use a little Olympus Tough - $150.00. It takes underwater photos, video and is good to -10 degrees. I have dropped it in brooks and on ledges without a problem. I use it in the winter - snow - rain no problem. It takes great pictures and fits in your pocket.

South America Trip Recommendations (Machu Pichu)

You might want to think about taking the Salkanty trail to the Inca trail - it adds a couple of days. Did this several years ago unfortunately we ran into a freak blizzard and had to turn back on the third day (Inca trail was also closed due to snow) this never happens ....... You can also...

Hello - thanks for the response. Glad to know there are others out and about that have slowed down. I actually hiked with Julie a couple of weeks ago - we did Pierce - I had done Moosilauke three days prior and it was a slow go for me that Saturday - we drove up together but that was about the...

Hello - Thanks for the reply - it would be nice to meet others that are slow and steady!! I've been doing some smaller mountains this winter mainly due to the cold - I can start later - I've enjoyed doing some different hikes. Thinking of trying for 53 with a view. Can you hike mid-week at...

    Arethusa Falls - Frankenstein Cliff

Hiking into the falls was well packed and easy going with light traction. The Cliff trail over to the cliff has not been traveled lately about 3 inches of powder but trail is easy to follow. Wish I hadn't left my snowshoes in the car! No sign of any recent visitors to the cliffs. Trail down...

    Hiking partner

I am 64 years old and have been hiking for a number of years. I have found that most of my hiking friends have decided to give up hiking. I have found myself hiking solo most of the time, however, I would love to find someone to hike with or even several others. I am not a big group hiker - I...

    Road closures

Zealand and Gale River are now closed. Went up hiking Monday and spent the night at Zealand Hut - met the Ranger in the parking lot this morning. The Ranger said there was some nasty weather coming in tonight. Stopped in on my way home to check out Gale River - both roads are gated.

    Bondcliff trail campsite

Someone suggested I stop in at the ranger station - that they might be helpful. I guess I will be brave and find my own cool spot and I will not sully it with TP - promise. I will be starting out in the afternoon so that nice flat area will probably be as far as I get the first night anyway...

    Bondcliff trail campsite

Can anyone give me a general idea of where the campsite is on the Bondcliff trail. I'd like to set up my tent then continue on to Bondcliff and Mt. Bond. I can't remember seeing any campsites the last time I was on this trail. Do I need to worry about leaving things - like sleeping bag and...

    Flat Mountain pond

Decided on Tuesday to hike up to Flat Mountain pond to spend the night at the shelter. Trails are in good condition, brook crossings are easy. A nice hike to a beautiful place. The shelter sits just above the brook so you get to fall asleep listening to the best music. Sat at the pond at...

    Wild River Wilderness

I am thinking of doing several days in the Wild River area. I know about the Imp shelter and the Perkins shelter - does anyone know if there are any campsites along the Black Angel Trail? Any suggestions on what might be a good three day backpack in the area.
