Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

Almost There Pub, just south of Rt 112 Rt 16 intersection. So named 'cause northbounders on Rt 16 are "almost" to Conway. Dine there in style after any hike on the Rt 16 side of the whites. Biker bar...almost. Full menu, $2 PBRs. The cook at this place is so tough she wears Dog Tags in case...

    Presidential Traverse: Sunday March 1

Chris, What app/program/device are you using to record your track over a 10 hr or longer period? My GPX app on an I5 is fun to use but sucks down the battery after 5 or 6 hours. Great trek..

    I-93 crash

Saturday I borrowed my wife's car to drive to the Cog base and hike the Jewell. All-wheel drive WITH four studded snow tires. We started using studs on her car seasonally because we have a 600' driveway that sometimes ices over. I can't speak to the cars behind you, but studs will give you...

    Kinsman question

This may seem like overkill to some, but my winter hikes in the Whites include all my winter gear...microspikes, snowshoes, crampons, ice axe, goggles, balaclava, mitts, outer layer, thermo pad, bivy . I've only used the axe on 2 occasions, but it weight little. This way, my weight carried is...

I'm planning to hike the North Twin Trail from Haystack Rd. to the spur to S. Twin to the Twinway as far as the Bondcliff Trail, summit Guyot, and return. I'm not planning to go to the Guyot campsite. Is there a watersource on the N. twin Spur or Twinway between S. twin and Mt. Guyot? The 2...

    Scale recommendations

Any recommendations for a handheld type scale to weigh my pack and contents? I'd like a scale that I can hold or hang from a hook or tree branch that weighs up to 30 lbs + and has oz. measurements to compare light weight items. Mechanical preferred. Thx.

    Any Knee Pad recommendations

Planning a 31 mi. hike thru the Mahoosucs next week. I'm thinking knee pads might come in handy, especially in the Notch itself. I'm guessing I'll be doing some crawling. Any recommendations?

    Bridge Status In Pemi Wilderness

Crossed Thoreau Falls footbridge yesterday. Good shape...all the bridges on the Zealand Trail and Ethan Pond Trail were great. Ditto the log crossings. No problems anywhere.

    Bug spray advice

Ben's 100...available at all the outlets including AMC stores. Careful with it around your face. There's been surprisingly little discussion about ticks and lyme disease...suffice to say, if you pick up a tick, get yourself checked out before it becomes a problem. Your dogs will get ticks and...

Moosilaukee via Beaver Brook Trail Thurs or Fri 5/8 or 9

Wx forecast looks good but it's pretty far ahead and could change...that said, I need the Beaver Brook Trail. Let's enjoy the views before the trees bud. I'll hike book time or better to the summit but not fast. Would consider positioning a car to take another route down. Plan 8 AM...

    Old Man/Modified Pemi Loop - 4/26/2014

Great report! Turns out I've done the modified Pemi-loop also before I knew there was such a thing. Now all the young guys (and gals) will have to rush up 93 to "log" it. There'll still be a seat at the Woodstock Brewery no matter which loop you log...

    Altimeter advice

I like my Suunto Core a lot. I had to get the light dial background for it to be readable. REI and EMS both have them. You need to reset the elevation at all known checkpoints to keep up with barometer changes. Seems accurate enough. Is it useful? If you stick to known trails like me, not...

    Need overnight advice

For the northern Presidentials, explore the Randolph Mountain Club's website, Grey Knob would be a good o/n choice. Also there are Hostels that are clean, comfortable, and inexpensive. The AMC also offers an excellent shuttle between traiiheads . Have fun!

    Hillsound Trail Crampon 19 MBT

April 10 I lost a crampon and a good samaritan hauled it down to the trailhead and hung it on the kiosk for parking. If it's still there, I'll swing by to get it. Has anyone noticed it at the trailhead? I'll be driving up this Friday, so I've some time for a reply. Thanks.

    Lost/Recovered Hillsound Trail Crampon

Lost my Hillsound Trail crampon on Carter Dome Trail below Carter Dome...it's now hanging on a pole by the kiosk at 19 MB trailhead. Would someone hiking from there or passing by pick it up and drop it at Joe Dodge front desk. I'll be driving up to ski or hike in late April. Appreciate a...
