    2019 Black Fly Season

Swarming and definitely hungry at Indian Brook in Essex VT yesterday. (550' elevation +/-).

    Lost Hiker on Moosilaukee

I've been on two led hikes. My first NH 4ks were a GMC group trip up the Hancocks. Car pooling and all that was fun. The second time was up Gore Mt. in VT in winter. I underestimated how slow the group would go and decided to split after we summitted--- for the sake of keeping some other plans...

    Silver Lake- Sailsbury/ Leicester VT

5/11/2019- Lollipop loop via Silver Lake trail and Silver Lake Loop trails. Trails mostly dry, no snow anywhere, no ice on the lake. Comments- lots of wildflowers out at the moment. Painted trilium along western shore of the loop trail, bellwort, trout lillies and hepatica along other areas...

    Longest snow cover?

I walked up the closed portion of route 108 in Stowe VT during lunch yesterday. 95% dry pavement for the first mile but some big patches of snow starting at 2000'. Lots of bare ground on the hillsides but some of the protected gullies will be hanging on for a wile. It's also above 60 degrees and...

    Hotel on Mt Washington??!!

Not sure how things would work in NH (Live free or die!!) but the permitting of this project would seem to be a pretty big uphill climb. I would be pretty stunned if this ever got built. Might just be a publicity stunt.

    drones

Wow, haven't run into this issue yet. I would go from intrigued to annoyed pretty quickly- especially as described in the opening post. My aim is iffy beyond 100' but I'd likely try to down it with a rock if it were invading her privacy.

    She's not friendly

I'm guessing it's tough to give up on the dream of having a 4 legged hiking companion. People adopt dogs and hope that they're good hikers only to discover that the dog is stressing out the whole time. Hopefully she had resolved that yesterday was the last time. We lucked out; our rescue is...

Post-hike food in Stowe or Waterbury

Take a dunk in the river and go to Piecasso!! I wouldn't call it formal but it is busy. Next option would probably be Doc Ponds. Not sure about veggie option but both have an outdoor patio area and both are reasonably cool and have good beer. The Prohibition Pig in Waterbury is another nice...

Mt. Washington hikers who called for help could face charges for rescue

If only any of them had technology like the internet available to them to look stuff up.

    ADK Question

Hiking in Vermont, I never really put much thought into the whole dog thing. We've had our dog for about 2 years and done quite a bit of hiking with him. Thankfully we have a nice trail near us that is a "no leash required" park with 7 or so miles of trails. I've always followed the whole...

    Banner Year For Ticks??

At this time of the year I stick to the low elevation walking trails (near where we live in Essex VT). Two years ago I had a total of 6 on me (none attached) from one walk on an old woods road that's not heavily used. Last year nothing but this year I've removed one that hadn't attached and one...

Snow in the front yard 5/16

I was surprised to see the snow flying this morning on my way out to the car this morning- in Essex VT. On the way to work in Stowe, several cars had 1" plus on the roof. WRT black flies- They weren't too bad on Mansfield last Thursday. Last year (at about this time of the year) we did a hike...

    Hiking Injuries

IT band issues sidelined me for about 3 years. It started in 2011. I was a bit out of shape for the hike I was trying to do. After summiting, I sat and relaxed for a little bit. A few minutes after getting going again, I decided to run down the trail for a bit and fouled up my IT band pretty...

Indian Brook and Colchester Pond VT- April and May 2014

I finished mapping out the blue trail and some of the other trails in that area. I checked in with the WVPD about the blue blazed connector trail and they're not really excited about it. Their mission statement: The Winooski Valley Park District's mission is to plan, acquire, and manage lands...

    Suggestions for a Loop

Most of the hikes I know about in VT are in the Central/Northern area and may not be on the way home at all. But if you're going to try to get to Burlington regardless of the implications to your driving schedule, there are some appealing options that you might consider. Mansfield loop from...

Best place to live for hiking

Recommendations for places to relocate to with my fiancée, possibly out West. We are avid day-hikers with mild interest in backpacking but also kayaking, running etc. Ideal most important attributes of new locale: Lots of great day hiking (not all exposed) within 1-2 hours drive. Reasonable...

Cannon via Lonesome Lake, Dodge cutoff, Hi Cannon, Kinsman Ridge tr. 11.08.14

Trail Conditions: First .5 miles of Lonesome Lake trail was 2" of snow +/- on wet leaves, no traction needed. Snow cover gradually increased on the way up with some limited icy sections. We "broke trail" on the dodge cutoff (3-4" of powder on top of a not-quite-frozen-yet mud foot bed). The snow...

Snow in the forecast for the whites this weekend

Also, I bought two pairs of the katoola microspikes at OGE last night. I'm excited about trying them out!

Snow in the forecast for the whites this weekend

A little of my back-story: most of my winter hiking has been in my trusty LL Bean snow claws. But they fell apart last winter (literally!). The new LL Bean is opening in Burlington and I'm hoping to bring them in and get a deal on replacements. I have some regular kamik tall snow boots that...
