Winter - Enjoy what is left of it

I was saying to a friend on a hike the other day that if there isn't going to be any more snow, we may as well just move onto spring and be done with it. Bring back the color. I'm fine with an early spring as I still have a lot of field work left to do for the next southern NH guide.

The road doesn't close and the parking at Mead Base is plowed.

Not a snow dump up north

In my experience, I've seen Quinttown Rd. plowed up to the last house, but that's not always the case. It's not plowed up to the parking area for J/Kodak.

Heads up, lots of major roads closed in the Northern NH

A public post on Facepage that's being updated as things change. I tried to link to it directly but VFTT didn't like that for some reason.

Looking like another wet one on Monday

Two people (that I know of) have done a single season winter 52WAV and one of those has also gridded the 52WAV. Like the 4Ks, some of the 52 become significantly longer in winter due to road closures.

New AMC Maine Mountain Guide is out

Creative endeavors are most often done as a labor of love than for profit. My 52WAV book has done really well but I ain't retiring anytime soon. 😉

New AMC Maine Mountain Guide is out

Steve and I have less ground to cover. The MMG is for an entire state; the WMG is mostly the middle third of NH. There aren't a ton of trails in northern NH and southern NH is covered in the SNHTG.

New AMC Maine Mountain Guide is out

I'm not going to speak for Carey but as someone else who does stuff for AMC, we are contracted for a set word count (although this has some flexibility within reason in the end).

New AMC Maine Mountain Guide is out

As a point of clarification, the latest MMG was published back on September 12. I know that Carey made a lot of changes in this edition with removing some trails and adding others. For one person covering the entire state I'd say he did a pretty great job.

    Fall Foliage

I was up on Fisher Mtn. yesterday. This area doesn't seem to be at peak yet but I agree with others in that the color that is around is somewhat muted.

Government Shutdown - Outdoors related please

Well it looks like this will happen all over again in 45 days. https://www.axios.com/2023/09/30/house-government-shutdown-45-days

Government Shutdown - Outdoors related please

Because I don't have an issue abiding by their request while this gets sorted.

Government Shutdown - Outdoors related please

PSA for volunteer trail adopters here ... If the shutdown happens we are to suspend work until it's resolved. I got an email from the Saco Ranger District this morning with a heads up. (I will withhold rants about this whole "shutdown" nonsense.)

Cumulative Elevation Gain and Miles: Lincoln Woods to Skookumchuck Parking

I don't have the numbers handy at the moment but you can add up the mileage and gain in the AMC White Mountain Guide using the stats for the various trails involved in this route.

Concord, NH trails for day hikes

Yup, Fort Mtn. would be good too. No trails but hikers are welcome on the access road. There are some good views at the summit but the best spot is the area of ledges about 0.1 mi. south of the summit buildings.

Concord, NH trails for day hikes

Between Concord and Rochester are Epsom Town Forest and Stonehouse Forest in Barrington. The former features the summit of Neville Peak and the latter is a large, relatively new trail system that includes Stonehouse Pond and its cliff. There is also an official trail system on Saddleback Mtn...

Concord, NH trails for day hikes

I live in Concord at the city has over 80 miles of trails. With the two newest trails on Oak Hill, it's possible to hike about ten miles out there. You can also fashion several loop hikes. I also heartily recommend Great Hill/Nottingcook Forest in Bow. Super views to the north from Great Hill...
