    Estimating Hiking Time

I am usually using the following rule of thumb: 1/2 hour per mile + 1/2 hour for each 1000 ft of elevation gain (unless I'm taking quite a few pictures:) .) I am a slow hiker, so I think these proportions seem to fit me better than Naismith's Rule...

Has anyone here ever come across human remains in the woods?

I realize that this is pretty unlikely since I suspect very few people go missing without being found within few days. Still, folks who are bushwhacking are more likely to make a discovery like this. I guess the only recent case in northeast that comes to my mind is of Geraldine Largay.

    Sharpening microspikes

I think my Kahtoolas are prime for some sharpening. I'm sure some folks have done it before. Is there any advantage to using a file instead of a grinder? How sharp should I make the points? Any other things I should be considering?

Is greeting other folks on trail with "Hi!" part of hiking etiquette?

Last week my wife joined me on a couple of hikes and she pointed out to me that many hikers either did not say anything when passing us, or when we said "Hi!" some of them replied back while others said nothing. I have never paid much attention to this but my wife is used to Polish hiking...

    Kayaking near North Conway

I'm usually thinking about hikes when visiting New Hampshire but this time around we are inviting friends and they asked about kayaking near North Conway. We have done Saco River trips several times, but what are other good spots for kayaking? Any lakes that you could recommend? Should we be...

    Wantastiquet-Monadnock Trail

Apparently Wantastiquet-Monadnock Trail is a new 50-mile trail. Not sure how interesting, especially section from Keene to Troy. https://forestsociety.org/wantastiquet-monadnock-trail https://www.chesterfieldoutdoors.com/wantastiquet-monadnock-greenway

    America's Best Long Trails

A really fun map of long distance trails from Backpacker magazine: https://www.backpacker.com/trips/map-americas-long-trails?fbclid=IwAR0DDjDQ6HEIHbuvAA4FccvA86zeMwWWxnH12n_5aKwf4L5CxBSa0n3W_Rk A few NE trails are on the map. It looks like almost all trails on the map are 100 miles or more.

    Bindings on MSR EVO Snowshoes

I got MSR EVO snowshoes for my daughter and they come with 3 rubber straps & buckle type locks. Question for anyone who uses these types of bindings - how do you usually lock them? Do you keep rear strap fixed (pre-adjusted to boot size) and you slide your foot back into the binding & then...

What animal could these paw prints belong to?

I saw these paw prints while hiking on AT with my daughter today in Vermont. I'm hoping these would belong to a bobcat... Any thoughts? I think the spacing on hiking stick marks is actually 1 inch since there are two sections, so the paw width was probably a little over 2 inches.

    Catamount Mountain, Adirondacks, 7/05/18

Catamount Mountain ( http://www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=12750 ) is not a very high peak, but it stands alone hence offering great views. The whole hike can fit into one afternoon - we started around 3 pm and reached the summit in about 2 hours hiking at a relatively slow pace and enjoying...

McKenzie Mountain - what's the "true" elevation?

I recently hiked McKenzie Mountain in Adirondacks and I noticed that there are sizable differences in quoted elevation depending on the source: Wikipedia gives 3861 ft - apparently sourced from Adirondack Trails High Peaks Region, published by Adirondack Mountain Club (...

    Improving Hike Safe Card

I bought a Hike Safe card last year. I'm pretty sure I have put in my e-mail address when filling out electronic form, yet I did not seem to have gotten any confirmation, or more importantly any reminder that it's time to renew for 2018. Perhaps I typed in my e-mail incorrectly but if not then...

    ADK Saddleback Rescue

Interesting story about a rescue effort involving many people in ADKs https://www.adirondackexplorer.org/stories/saddleback-rescue Excerpt from the article: The rescue took about thirty-seven hours to complete, starting with the emergency call placed by the injured hiker’s friend at about noon...

Did you ever spend an unplanned night in the woods?

Did you ever spend an unplanned night in the woods? I'm curious as to how that went and if it changed what you bring along or practice to get better prepared should you run into trouble again? I'm trying to re-asses my level of readiness for such an unforeseen event and I think I should bring...

    Green Mountains Hiking Gudiebook

I'm looking for a guidebook to hiking Green Mountains. I'm primarily focused on completeness for central region (say around Killington: https://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/#?map=11!43.5471!-72.8332 ) with trail descriptions, distances, cumulative ascent / descent and trail maps. Any suggestions...

    Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway 6/18/17 - 6/23/17

I finally got around to write up a trip report from my hike of Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway back in June. Since I wanted to use quite a few pictures I acutally set up a blog for myself. You can check the full report at https://hikingatsnailspace.blogspot.com/ Just a few words about logistics -...

    Hiking in Fog

While hiking Mt Monadnock few weeks ago I was worried about thunderstorms that were in the forecast, but instead I was greeted by fog once I reached Pumpelly Trail. This made figuring out where to go a bit challenging to say the least. It was kind of fun at the same time but I had my gps to fall...

    Porcupine Encounters

I don't get to see many porcupines on the trail, so I was quite surprised when I ran into two of them in Monadnock State Park just at the outset of my multi-day hike (I was doing the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway.) I spotted the first one at Gilson Pond Campground at the end of the weekend when...
