According to the MVUMs, most USFS roads aren't "supposed" to be open until 5/15. Some not until 5/25, 6/1, or 6/15. I feel like those dates are treated as more of a suggestion, though.
Love the Wapack. The trail between Watatic and North Pack is not anything close to the Watatic approach as far as people and trail conditions go. Don't skip the side quests to Kidder or the Cliff Trail on North Pack.
That was the most awesome thing I have ever seen. Very emotional. We had perfect viewing conditions from our cabin on a hilltop in Atkinson, ME. The views included the entirety of the 100 Mile Wilderness, capped by Katahdin at the end. I watched with my dram of Lagavulin as Katahdin went...
Someone only made it about 100 yards up the Oliverian Brook parking lot before turning around on snowshoes. By the end of the day, snowballing was becoming a problem with a crust forming on top. Whoever gets to break trail is going to have their work cut out for them.
We got to camp Friday night and got to enjoy being dumped on. Got about 2 feet in the Sandwich Range. Powder shoes are a must. It took 6 hours to do the 2 mile hike out of the woods on 22" shoes.

"We're not in the 100% area of totality," says Huhn, who says he thinks the sun will be around 99.9% obscured. "It's very, very close." Close but no cigar, according to eclipse experts. "I would never tell someone, '99% is close enough.' That's definitely not the case with a solar eclipse," says...
The state and the GMC are actively discouraging people from backcountry viewing. The state has explicitly stated that trails on state land will be closed.

Was able to get an inexpensive cabin in Milo with some friends. If the weather is a bust across the region, I'm not going to be sad to stare into a woodstove all day. If we have to change location due to weather, the experience will be worth losing the booking fees.
