More on NH hikers and driver's licenses

The Garmin SAR plan is only active when you are over 99 mile from home. I believe that the SPOT plan is active when you are over 150 miles from home or enter a another country. SPOT considers snowshoeing a hazardous sport when not done at a commercial operation.

    Another Falling Waters Loop Fatality

What is the general guidance for a Franconia Ridge Loop in the winter - Clockwise or Counter Clockwise? I would assume counter clockwise, climb Falling Waters and descend Greenleaf to Old Bridle Path. My assumption is based on the potential difficulties one could encounter descending Falling...

Hancocks campground on the Kanc closed August 11-25, 2022 due to bears

I stayed at Big Rock Campground around the 4th of July which is few miles east of Hancock Campground. They had warning signs for bear activity, recommendations to store food in a locked vehicle, and they had number of bear boxes located around the campground. Bear boxes is not something I...

Hiker Rescue - I think they didnt have a map

Camels Hump can have a similar issues when hikers return from the summiting to the hut clearing. The Burrows, Monroe, and the Long Trail North lead from the clearing. The majority of the day hikers have ascended using either Burrows or Monroe trail. There is a large sign on the Long Trail...

Need a driver to help with some shuttling

Given the users and characters that use this forum. I would assume you would get more offers for assistance then you could shake a stick at if your request was written similar to this. In exchange for ride assistance I will find and break out trail to a NH48 summit of your choice after a...

Hiker Rescue yesterday on Washington (Mt Clay)

I agree Andrew that you did not need to be at elevation. On Saturday at 1 pm we traversed Sheffield Heights along I91 Southbound in a car in light rain with the heat on and the outside temperature was 45 degrees. High point on I91 is around 1,850 in elevation.

Are gas prices affecting your hiking?

I had two options when heading out for a hike. Now real only one when heading out. 1977 Chevy Van with 292 Inline 6 that gets around 12 mpg or Chevy Bolt that travels 250 miles plus on less then $9 on electric. $100 to fill the van for slightly less distance. In the winter our distance we...

    Tupper Lake Hiking Triad

On Sunday completed the Tupper Lake Hiking Triad. Arab, Goodman, and Coney. Each 2 plus to 3.5 mile round trip with summits all around 2,500 feet. I believe each would have had excellent view of Tupper Lake but with the persistent snow and snow squalls moving through we saw nothing. Having...

GAIA Acquired by Outside Magazine Organization

Gaia has added a Feature/Weather Overlay on Snowmobile Trails that you can add after you have add the Winter map. It appears that Maine, New Hampshire and New York have snowmobile trails but Vermont does not. Unfortunately it appears to be for their premium membership. VAST (Vermont Associate...

    Vermont Apre' s-Ski & Beer

I have taken advantage of the Trapp Bierhall while skiing. From the article that peakbagger linked, "While getting tipsy before alpine skiing is inadvisable, cross-country skiing back to your accommodations at the Trapp Family Lodge, which sits on 2,500 acres, could be a more responsible...

    MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoes

In 2019 I mailed my 30-inch Lighting back to MSR for repair. Emailed them with pictures of the broken retainer (the metal piece riveted to the snowshoe frame that the binding attaches to). Emailed on Jan 14th and heard back on the 16th. They replaced one retainer and both crampons that had...

    Steripen UV Water Treatment

I have used an older model of the Steripen for secondary treatment after filtering through a MSR ceramic filter where virus could potential be an issue on larger developed water bodies. For example when kayak/canoeing on Lake Champlain or lower sections of the Connecticut River. We have found...

GAIA Acquired by Outside Magazine Organization

I have also begun to relay on Gaia as my primary GPS with the Garmin moved to a backup unit. I find the Gaia user interface far nicer than Garmin. I have had two separate issues Gaia since it was purchase by Outside. Both have been with Outside's request to enter a password though their...

    Katoolah K10 crampons

I have found that the K10s do have some shifting around under the sole of the boots. I don't believe any worst then poorly attached crampons. The front straps on the older version of the K10s does require some time and effort to adjustment to get a tight fit on the boot toe. I pickup a second...

    Katoolah K10 crampons

I used the K10 with the pups. The shorter 1-inch or ¾-inch on the aluminum triangle shaped points on the K10 appear to be less lethal than the points on a crampon. They are also positioned under the sole of the boot. This is observational only. My pup has gotten his paws between the outer...

    "Must Have" Kayak Accesories

Nice points to add to the discussion peakbagger and TEO. I second the recommendation to practice wet exit and entry. Not that difficult of a skill to learn. But not something you want to try in the middle of the lake on your first attempt. On thing to determine if you kayak does not have...

At Large Kayak Camping - Is There Such A Thing?

Surprised now one has mentioned remote kayak camping at the Lonesome Lake Hut. The paddle back and forth across the lake would be amazing. The carry from the trailhead to lake might be bit adventuresome. Would make a great trip report.

At Large Kayak Camping - Is There Such A Thing?

Some other areas not already discussed: Pillsbury State Park in New Hampshire. A couple of remote sites across the small pond. Main kayak locations in the Vermont State Park system are: Green River Reservoir in Hyde Park. Only remote water accessible sites. Human or electric powered boats...

    "Must Have" Kayak Accesories

I usually pack a bilge pump, sponge, and paddle float in a mesh bag on the back deck within reach when sitting in the cockpit. A large sponge works well to remove the last inch or two of water from the cockpit that the pump will not remove. The paddle float can be a hard foam or manual...

Best GPS for hiking ap for my cell

Does the Otterbox case have an attachment point for a lanyard? This winter I was looking at Gaia and snowshoeing and tripped and fell. Arms posthole into the powder. Get back up on my feet and then realize the phone is not in hand. Took some digging and time to locate the phone in the snow...
