    Mt Washington, Butterflies and Dandelions

The Cog is not trying to keep the reports secret. Down playing the existence of endangered butterflies is to keep people from going off trail in an attempt to see them and disturb their habitat further. I'm not sure I would call dandelions invasive species. An article in Among the Clouds...

    Return to winter conditions?

Winter is back with a vengeance. Received over 2' in this storm and still snowing.

    Winter is Back

After a really bad start to the winter things on Mt. Washington have changed dramatically in the last 15 -20 days. February went out like a lamb and March came roaring in like a Lion. It has been snowing off and on for last 10 days. Things now look almost like normal for this time of year. I...

    Mt Washington Master Plan Hearings

The Real Story The cog is not working toward running dual tracks from the top to the bottom of the mountain and has no current or future intentions to do so. There can be no limit placed on the number of visitors to the summit due to a condition in the deed from Dartmouth College to the State...

Cog Rolls out big development plans near the summit.

Thank you for the support. Having owned the Cog railway for 40 years something was bound to sink in. By the way I love your cover photo of the sumo wrestler on jumping skis. Although I am not quite as rotund as that fellow it reminds me of going off the old trestle jump in Berlin. It was...

Cog Rolls out big development plans near the summit.

We do have an engineer helping us to design the effluent pipeline. The line is going to be oversized and the plan is to have the effluent constantly trickle down this oversized line and never fill so no head is created in the line until it gets near the turbine. A pressure valve will be...

Cog Rolls out big development plans near the summit.

Peakbagger a good summary of the meeting last night. I would just like to clarify a couple of points. The representative from the DNCR was Sarah Stewart the Commissioner of DNCR. I don't think we have everything figured out yet and there is a tremendous amount of work left to be done...

Also the next time you are on the summit look closely at the way our track is constructed. It rests on wooden blocking every 12 feet and is elevated. As a result endangered plant species grow underneath the track in most places. If it was laid on the ground this would not be possible.

Cog Rolls out big development plans near the summit.

There have been several master plans developed for the summit and a large survey done of people visiting the summit. All of these are available on the Mt. Washington Commission Master Planning Website. I have used these plans and surveys as the bible for all the improvements I have been...

Cog Rolls out big development plans near the summit.

A normal railroad car is about 85 feet long. These cars are only 40 feet. The boarding platforms will need to be permanent to withstand the weather, but they will be perforated allowing both light, air and water to go through them onto the ground. We intend to build them resting on relatively...

Cog Rolls out big development plans near the summit.

The Mount Washington Commission minutes of the meeting won't be available on their website until they are approved at the next meeting. I don't expect this new facility will lead to a big increase in summit usage. It is meant to reduce the congestion caused by multiple trains loading and...
