That road washes out on a regular basis. I believe the last time was 2017-2018. I finished my 4's over 70 and waited until 09/01/18 so that the road could be repaired.

I drove once during a intense storm like this one. The state police for that storm required 4 wheel drive with winter tires, plus chains.

I would call the Green Mtn FS office for that area and ask. Been my experience that the GMF is oriented towards hiking related activities, much more so that the Whites.

There are some areas in the Whites which are particularly snowy, and in my experience there's about a 1/2 mile section between Guyot and the spur to W. Bond that can have deep snows. But, given his substantial experience, he probably knew and planned for this.

Thanks for posting that AMR interview. I've been on that section of trail. She's an example of bad things happening to experienced people. Very glad to read her account of what was largely a self rescue.

This was my experience as well growing up in Pittsfield, except that we could also get a Channel 6 which was broadcast (IIRC) as an NBC affiliate.

He was the real deal. No pretense about him.

I enjoyed watching him as a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's. I also enjoyed it when his cat Fluffy walked across the set as only cats can do.
