    Hiking the Baldfaces this weekend

It sounds like we should go up the north side first, up Bicknell Ridge. Then go to North Baldface. If we're feeling really good we'll continue to Baldface Knob and down Slippery Brook. If not, then we'll backtrack down the northern Baldface Circle trail.

    Hiking the Baldfaces this weekend

It's been over 10 years since I've done the Baldfaces so I'm a little fuzzy on details. We're supposed to hike it tomorrow morning and the weather is saying a chance of rain. My concern is how difficult the ledges will be for a fairly new hiker and two dogs? If it's too difficult I'm thinking we...

    Dog on Caps Ridge

I took my 80lb lab up there two years ago. I remember two spots where he needed a little help. On one spot I tied his leash to his pack and hauled him up the incline. Another spot he needed coaxing to go under a rock and jump over a gap. It's the hardest trail I've brought a dog on but I'd still...

Is the Mt Clinton Road parking lot plowed?

The forest service says the road is closed but I think the gate is after the parking lot. Do they plow the parking lot? I'm taking a group up there this Saturday and need to tell them to meet at the Clinton road lot or Highland center.

    Beginner winter hike suggestions.

I remember the back of cannon being steep with huge boulders to climb over? Is it better with snow? Edit: I should have read the rest of the new posts. Cannon doesn't sound like a good option for a bunch of new winter hikers. I'm going to plan a trip up Mt. Pierce next weekend. That sounds...

    Beginner winter hike suggestions.

A few people have mentioned Pierce, maybe we'll try that. How's Hedgehog Mountain, on the UNH trail, in the winter? It sounds like a short easy hike but I hear it has ledges which could be an issue if it's icy?

    Beginner winter hike suggestions.

Hello. I'm an experienced winter hiker but some friends I'm taking are new to it. I'm looking for some short but scenic hikes to take them on. We've done Welch Dickey which was easy but maybe too short. Chocora was about the limit of my friends abilities. We made it above treeline and got some...

Looking for suggestions for a 2 person 4 season tent.

I'll look around on ebay and see what I can find. In the meantime I'm going to experiment with my akto some more. Maybe if I make a little sleeping bag for my dog he'll sleep at my feet. The last time I camped with him he curled up next to my chest and kept pushing me off my mat.

Looking for suggestions for a 2 person 4 season tent.

I'm looking into getting a 2 person 4 season tent. Something I can put my dog in (a Lab) when I go winter camping. I have a Hilleberg Akto now which is great. It's really cramped trying to fit my dog in it though. I'd like to get a Hilleberg Nallo 2 but they're so expensive, $625! Does anyone...

    Old photo of Franconia Ridge

In case anyone is curious about an update, my parents found where the photo was taken. They found the stone wall in the photo, some of the rocks still line up. It's at the intersection of Timber Lane and Lafayette Road. Here's a link to the google street view with the wall.

We ordered that postcard. It says it's from the official site of the Sunset House.

That looks close. I wonder if the road still exists? I bet the stone wall is still there. Here's a more detailed photo of the peaks. If you line up the summit of lafayette with the rock slides below it, you can get the angle from the summit the photo was taken from. http://i.imgur.com/yAyvh.jpg

    Old photo of Franconia Ridge

On the postcard you found the open spot is green, so it must be a field. The original photo is black and white.

Wow, nice find. It's almost eerie how similar it is. Maybe it's a notable spot for some reason.

That lake must be Echo Lake?

    Old photo of Franconia Ridge

I posted this photo here years ago and it was determined it was Franconia Ridge. I can't find the old thread though? Does anyone know exactly where this photo was taken from? I'd like to go to the same spot and get a modern day photo. The stone wall might still be there. We're not completely...

Wildcats over the Wildcat Ridge Trail. 2-12-12

I went to park at the Glen Ellis falls trailhead but it's not plowed out. Ended up starting at Pinkham and hiking the Lost Pond trail to get to WRT. WRT is very steep and icy at the start. I put crampons on and left them on the entire day. My dog had no issue going up, I have no idea how he does...

    Flume trail info?

That's what I've heard from other people. Maybe my last hike was worse than normal conditions.

    Headcams

I got a GoPro because it has a good reliability history and lots of mounting options. The case is also very rugged and watertight. The battery only gives about 2 hours of video though. It's been mounted to my bike helmet and my dog. :) In a few weeks I'll try it on my ice climbing helmet.

    Flume trail info?

Does anyone know what the conditions are on the Flume trail? I plan on hiking in a few weeks. A few winters ago I hiked the trail it had an incredible amount of ice on it. I wished I had ice tools instead of an ice ax. I didn't get to the top of the slide until 5-6:00. It was fun though. :)
