    Winter Trail Running and Negligence

jrcinnh said: My questions were rhetorical. My point was if it’s to offset rescue costs anyone who needs rescue should be charged. The way things are going now, nothing seems to sink in and the vast number of hikers who are dying are not those who typically have enough gear to spend an...

    Winter Trail Running and Negligence

I guess the question I have is what is the purpose of being fined if being found “under equipped”. (I wish we knew what was in his pack!!!!) Is it to make an example as a possible way to prevent others from being under equipped? Is it a way to offset rescue cost? In the first instance of...

    Has the Tsunami Finally Crested?

Well not exactly, we have been property owners in Coos County since 1984, and had always planned on pairing down to one home after retirement. Post Edit: I am not trying to get into a spitting contest of who was here the longest or lifelong residents vs permanent residents I was simply trying...

    Has the Tsunami Finally Crested?

I hope so!!!!! We retired up here to hike just a few months before COVID . Appalachia parking lot did not look horrific Wednesday and we actually did a small low loop to Hermit Lake via Tucks, Raymond Path and Old Jackson Road on Thursday. The Pinkham Notch Parking lot had many...

    How crowded mid-week?

Stay away from anything “on a list” at times it’s been crazy to see Appalachia parking lot overflowing onto Rte 2 mid week. Hikes from Pinkham B (Randolph East Parking lot have been quiet).

    AMC Executive Director pay

Glorified Hotel Manager OK...I expect my post to be deleted by moderators. BUT....IMHO it seems to me his most critical role has been as a "hotel manager".....essentially that is what the AMC runs...let's face it. "Ritz Crawford" is just an extension of the chain...just more upscale...

    Zipperless Sleeping Bag

If you are going to shell out that kind of moola then consider a Western Mountaineering Linelite: http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/bagdetail.cfm/WE2325 It's 14 oz and $205 It packs down to a size that I'd estimate about between a football and a softball. I have one and I'm fairly happy...

    waiver forms for organized hikes

Am I missing something here or what? A waiver for the AMC might help "protect" the AMC's assets and potential liability but I cannot understand HOW it would potentially prevent a trip leader from a lawsuit. In fact the exact wording, about 2/3 of the way down the waiver is: "I agree not to sue...

    Directions for Success Pond Road

We were on Success Pond Road a couple weeks ago and that sign is no longer there. Look for an unsigned road adjacent to a clearing that "resembles the look" of a landfill/log yard. The road is in pretty good shape with some washboard sections. The main road is fairly well defined.

    waiver forms for organized hikes

Signing a waiver does not always stop litigation and I believe MIGHT even work against a trip leader by potentially making them the responsible party. Just a thought here.

beta light tarp and other ultra light shelters

I am another person who casts their vote for a Shires Tarptent. We own the Rainshadow and have used it exclusively since we got it this season. It holds my husband, my LARGE 80+ dog, myself, and our gear very nicely. We have stayed dry in rain and wind. http://www.tarptent.com/tt3.html I am...

    Backpack for Beginner Female

As an ex-marketing person I am not crazy about SOME backpacking/hiking gear that is marketed towards women. I think "snowshoes for women" are at the top of my hit list. A pack "that fits" is the best pack for your wife...whether it is a "woman's pack"or a "man's pack". I think the best...
