    SAR Discussion -

All-in all I believe you did the correct thing. It's really hard to deal with a hiker who is just plain exhausted, and even with 30 SAR team members, a litter-carry is not risk-free, and we've treated litter carriers who injure themselves in the process. It's actually easier, at least as far as...

    Leather Boots in Winter

Thanks! I just talked to people at REI who said that Montrail has found some kind of problem with their Ice 9 system, REI folks didn't know what, and hence the sale price on the boots. The boots arevery comfortable, obviously much more comfortable than most plastics, but also more comfortable...

    Leather Boots in Winter

What about Montrail Ice 9s? I just purchased a pair of Montrail Ice 9's from REi, on sale. They are supposed to work with Montrail's Ice 9 crampon, which attaches not just to the front and real lips but also to a little piece of metal attached to the vibram sole underneath. The boots are great...

    Tragic News in NH

There is some information that I have that I will release when I get a chance now that the system is back up and running. Any thoughts, ideas, comments are welcome. This first item is a graph put together by Jim M., a regular hiker at Monadnock, who took data from the Weather Underground. I had...

Another White Mountain Hiker Death Reported

This is terrible news. This is also different because it isn't clear whether cause was head trauma or hypothermia.Closer to civilization, but another tragedy nevertheless, within a two week period. It's been a cold winter.

The tent is a one person two-hoop tent non-freestanding with some purple color in parts. The snowshoes were Tubbs 30". We are looking for two waterbottles and the tent. If anybody finds these items please take a picture of the site, note the exact location on a map or GPS, and either bring to...

    Tragic News in NH

Peter you're right the haze was that cloud of tiny ice particles- 100% humidity, at least several thousand feet high. Last night as I was thinking about this I also thought of the perfect storm. Ken did indeed know the weather forecast, but perhaps didn't fully grasp the meaning of it. There...

    Reliable snowshoes

MSRs are fantastic but watch out for the fact that the bindings aren't as elastic as you'd like at temps way below zero. Otherwise they are great.

Suggestions for hiking in early icey conditions

Forgot to add: Yaktrax work really well for about a mile. Then the rubber breaks. They seem to have designed a beefier one to solve this problem, but haven't talked to anybody who has used them yet. The Stabilicers are used by a lot of hikers in places where the ice is too thin to use crampons...

Suggestions for hiking in early icey conditions

Two other alternatives: http://www.kahtoola.com/ These are lightweight, low profile somewhat blunter crampons that can take a beating when the ice is too thin to use crampons you want to keep sharp for ice climbing. http://store.yahoo.com/gusa/i41029a.html Garmont imports a running shoe...

    Tragic News in NH

CaptCaper had a really good question a few posts back about snow shoes. I just talked to my friend at AMC rescue and it turns out the snowshoes were recently found by the Zealand caretaker closer to the trail junction prior to the start of the Twinway, perhaps not far from where he was camped...

    Tragic News in NH

I appreciate the replies above. Someone asked me if he was in fact wet. I don't know, but I don't think it would have been possible to be dry like you can get on a bluebird day if you wear the right wicking layer, control your pace, and wear something very breathable like softshell materials...

Thank you all for your appreciation of Ken and your good will towards his friends and family. I can’t say enough about Ken and what he meant to fellow rangers, hikers, trail runners, and the public. He was a tremendously enthusiastic and positive person with an ever-present contagious smile and...
