    GPS co-oridinates

In the hope that some-one down there speaks English please note that any plot of two or more axes is expressed in co-ordinates. They can be map co-ordinates or GPS co-ordinates. Try taking an English course; you may have to leave your country to do so.

    GPS co-oridinates

Could someone be kind enough to tell me the GPS co-ordinates of Times Square, Couchsascraga and Santanoni? Thanks, Doug

    Camp Booties vs Overboots

I use MEC booties and I wear them in camp. I sit on a blue foam square and keep another one under my feet. This rig keeps me toasty warm. The booties are great in a hut. BTW, I only use an MSR Whisperlite and can see no reason for playing round with anything else. Have fun. Doug

Congratulations to the Grey Jay - Canada's proposed national bird

I should have prefered the raven, but I guess the Canada Jay will do. The only problem is that back in the day they would steal our camp blind. To harm one was very bad luck.

For those with torn knee meniscus

Thank you, Stan. I'll talk to my surgeon about this. I'm waiting for two knee replacements and suspect I'm beyond meniscus replacement.

Water Filters: Squeeze vs Pump vs Gravity

I use the First Need water filter (Google), it also eliminates viruses. You can order a tube and prefilter, but I got a tube from the local pharmacy and a pre-filter from campmor.com. I got hepatitis A twice as a kid and now I want the best protection. First Need is the only way to go. Trust me.

Broke my Plantar Fascia! Will I ever play the piano again?

It is a comon 'injury' particularly for young people whose muscles outgrow the fascia and are constricted by it. It also occurs among athletes for the same reson. It also occurs at the Achilles tendon. It requires day surgery and the problem is generally solved immediately; after that it...

Boiling from snow vs. liquid water in winter

What Mr. Rankin said. Please remember that it is important to have some liquid water in your pot as snow is such an efficient insulator that you can burn out the bottom of your pot before you melt any snow.

    cross country ski question

What B&S said. I use BC skis (Canadian Army surplus) with Silvretta 500's (Google) that take my plastics (Scarpa Inverno), but I wouldn't use them to pull a pulka - at least not without skins. With skins you ought to be all right, but I think snowshoes would be more practical if you are...

New Arc'Teryx Boots / Custom Boots

DayTrip, the problem is suppliers. I am talking about single leather boots, not plastics (I have them too). Try to find a supplier of Lowa boots; Zamberlan and Sportiva. The problem is that these makers (not Lowa) send Chinese products to the North American market. There is Sport Dinaco in...

New Arc'Teryx Boots / Custom Boots

Most European made hiking boots have heat molded inserts. You mold them with the socks you will use.

    The Birds

As a Canuck who has spent many (50+) years in the North Country (Taïga and boreal forest), Grey Jays - Canada Jays - Whisky Jacks are a totem here. They will steal everything they can fly off with, but it is extremely bad luck to harm one.

    Hiking after knee surgery

What TCD posted is in my experience right on. Oddly I can no longer ride a bicycle although it is thought to be easier on the knees.

    Hiking after knee surgery

?? My first operation for a torn meniscus was in 1992 and I was back playing rugby the following week-end. At that time my surgeon was the surgeon for the late, lamented Montreal EXpos. He went to training camp in Florida the day after the operation. Then, if you did not have a ride you had...

    RIP Leon Gorman

I have many fine memories of L.L. Bean and they used to be the annual victim of my pilgrimages.

    Frayed Shoelace Ends

I'm looking at my Perlon and of course it is nylon, but I don't thing it is Kernmantel. Kermantel would be a shroud over a core. I know this from my own climbing ropes. Perlon, at least from 3 to 7 mm seems to be braided.

    Side-Lined

I have two left of the ADK 46, but I haven't hiked/backpacked for three years now. I'm waiting for two knee replacements, hopefully this winter.

    Frayed Shoelace Ends

I solved the problem by going to MEC and buying Perlon. Any shop that sells climbing gear will have it and heat cut it to your desired length. I use 3mm for trail shoes and 4mm for boots. It will never fray, will outlast your footwear and holds a knot beautifully (or more people would die)...

Is it time for the annual blueberry thread?

Blueberry season started here to-day apparently. Mmmmmm.
