3-day canoe route in the 'Daks region - suggestions?

Thanks, everyone. I'll research those suggestions. They all sound great. One follow up if you don't mind: If we do something like Tupper Lake or Racquette River, do we need to reserve campsites in advance or is it sort of "first come first serve"? Chip, the Lake George idea is an...

3-day canoe route in the 'Daks region - suggestions?

Hi everyone – My wife and I are looking for a three-day canoe route in the Adirondacks. We’llb be on the water Mon, July 1 to Wednesday, July 3rd – Though we’d consider an addition al day if the route necessitated it. We’d prefer: 1) A fairly remote area. 2) Relatively calm water – Lakes...

Cabot and Waumbek in a day?

Thanks, everyone! I posted my question and then was away from the computer for awhile, but I greatly appreciate everyone's input. Looks like I'll do two hikes in the day....and finally get the 48 out of the way. I've been stuck on 45 for over a year as I got pulled back to some old favorites...

Cabot and Waumbek in a day?

I'm heading to NH for the weekend soon with the goal of finishing up the 48. My three remaining peaks are Owls Head, Cabot and Waumbek. With only two full hiking days I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to do Cabot and Waumbek together in a day? I know a section of trail and/or a...

    Noonmark and Round Mtn

Thanks, both of y'all. That was exactly the type of info I needed. Sounds like it could be a great hike - We'll definitely carry some traction devices.

    Noonmark and Round Mtn

We are thinking about doing a short hike tomorrow, basically the loop over Noonmark and Round mtn via the Stimson and Weston trails. Anyone have any knowledge of conditions? Enough snow to require snowshoes, for instance, or whether or not those steep pitches of Stimson are negotiable? Any...

    Vermont Rt. 108

It's still closed from the usual points - Smuggs to near Mansfield Ski area. I was up the Smuggs side on a bike last week and we were turned back by snow about 1 mile from the summit.

A bit off topic: The Kanc

Stan! respecting your anonymity on the board, I'll just say: I think you and your son used to do some volunteer work with an organization where I was the program director. If I'm right, then it's good to reconnect and I hope you're well! Kevin

A bit off topic: The Kanc

Thank you for the feedback, Jay. We expect to deal with sand etc....and will descend at the pace of a snail accordingly. We'll also be riding our old bikes. However, there's no amount of "Slow" that can keep a road tire upright on ice. My wife, who is clearly smarter than I, just pointed...

A bit off topic: The Kanc

Excuse me if this type of question should not be posed here - and please remove it if that's the case. Besides hiking/backpacking, my better half and I are avid road cyclists. We are heading to the Whites to hike on Saturday. While planning, we got the idea to ride the Kanc on Sunday, from...

Camping spots in the Great Gulf?

For what it's worth, we had no trouble whatsoever getting a campsite. We arrived at Osgood tentsite at about 4:00 on Saturday (of a three-day weekend at the height of leafpeeper season!) and three of the five tent platforms were empty. we discovered the next day that all but two of the...

Great Gulf and the Northern Presis, 10.6 - 10.8.07

After getting some ideas and feedback from folks here, my wife and I spent three days in the Great Gulf last weekend. We've been all over the Whites, but somehow we'd never been in the Great Gulf area. Before heading out, we stopped by Ragged Mountain and ended up buying a new tent - which...

Camping spots in the Great Gulf?

Thanks, Danielle and Bobby. We are planning to head up the Great Gulf trail to the area near the intersection of Six Husbands - the AMC map lists several camp sites in that area, I'm just not sure if it will be so crowded that those are full. Our plan for Sunday is, well...a lack of a plan...

Camping spots in the Great Gulf?

Two of us are planning to do a three day in the Great Gulf. Hitting the trail about noon tomorrow - setting up camp somewhere - dayhiking Sunday up to the ridge - hiking out Monday morning. In people's experience, will finding a campsite be a big problem? Should we plan to stay at Osgood if...

    Hiking Katahdin during busy season

Thanks for all that great information..... While we're at it, would anyone suggest a particular route? We're interested in two things: 1. Reaching the summit (obviously). 2. Hiking the Knife Edge, though not necessarily in both directions Y'all are a wealth of knowledge, and I appreciate it.

    Acadia family camping in August?

For what it's worth, we tried to make a reservation online and were denied, but when we called they had space....So if you only checked online only, try giving a call.

    Hiking Katahdin during busy season

I apologize if this has been asked a million time, but a quick search of the forums yielded no results.... My partner and I would like to climb Katahdin via the Knife Edge on Thursday, June 29th. From what I understand, the number of hikers is restricted to the number of parking spots, and...

Passoconaway and Whiteface from the Kanc?

Thank you. Both those suggestions are very helpful and much appreciated. I'll post a trip report when we get back. If I could ask one more thing: Is there an area to car camp near Wonalancet or the Blueberry ledge trailhead? We're planning to camp tomorrow night and get an early start...
