things that make you feel better even if they are a bit impractical

HAha , love the SPAM. Years ago my buddy and I were novice (relatively clueless) backpackers, before the advent of all the energy/protein bars, we worried about what to eat if we had a stove malfunction on multi-day trips. We decided to each carry a can of baked beans as emergency provisions...

    Ageism or Irresponsibility?

I agree that there is no "magic" age cutoff, very different for each individual. But it is an important area of judgement, similar to proper equipment and safe conditions. At some point it can cross the line of reckless. As I venture into my upper 60s, as mostly a solo hiker, I certainly have...

    Nice Weather, for Ducks ;)

A question. How are the trees holding up in the Black Hills? On my last trip there, 2015, the area was experiencing an insect infestation that was doing a number on the pine trees, leading to fire issues.

Beats a Hurricane - Fall Weather Transition

Of course, I believe, (feel free to correct my assumption) a primary purpose for those trains was shipping lumber off those mountains, they would have been highly deforested in the mid to late 1800s. Not something we would encourage today.

    DUPR At Baxter

The Togue pond gate opens at six, traffic hits Roaring Brook lot by 6:20, ideally your friend should arrive before that on a weekend. She would not need a DUPR, but could check with reservations. Interestingly, I was at RB for three nights in July, great weather, hiking lots full but not all...

    Mt Carrigain well water

I enjoyed a great hike up Mt Carrigain yesterday I noticed at the well there is a bucket with a rope to draw water from the well. For many years this was signed as non potable water, I thought I remembered the issue was arsenic? A group of trail workers-thanks guys great trail maintenance work-...

    Zealand Parking

Last Saturday on a poor weather day I got the last spot in the main lot at 8, the overflow lot was also full when I came out at 10:30, no one parking on the road at that time.

    Funds For Franconia Ridge

That would be a plus. I recognize the danger of overuse, especially that trail, but 10 cars seems a little tight.
