    Tarptents-Talk to me

I have a tarptent and absolutely love it. I have a two-person Squall version that I usually use as a solo tent (it's an older model, I've had it for at least five years or so.) It is really an awesome tent... very light and I don't feel like I'm in a coffin like I did with my prior solo tent...

    Flags on the 48 2012

Not sure whether the guys from the NG took pictures too, but there is a gallery of photos on the Concord Monitor website: http://cmonitor.mycapture.com/mycapture/folder.asp?event=1530712&CategoryID=15617

    LT rides and car options

The Green Mountain Club's End to Enders Guide has transportation options for section hikers and end to enders... if you visit the website you should be able to pick up a copy for a couple of bucks. (Mine is many years old and probably out of date, or I'd list them for you.) For what it's worth...

    Morgan/Percival questions

    1. I don't know if the parking lot is still closed, but it was closed as of the last weekend of winter. 2. The trail starts right from the parking lot. You will see a sign for the connector trail fairly close to the start, I believe it's called the Morse Trail. 3. I hiked up Percival first...

    Finishing the Belknap 12

Congrats RnR... you couldn't have had a nicer group for your finish! :) Glad you are getting back out on the trails again!!

No worries! As I recall, I was so far behind, it was probably like I wasn't really there anyway...

    Shuttle Connection Lincoln

I used them them a few times for backpacking... very happy with the service and the price. They can get pricey as you get farther afield from Lincoln (as you'd expect) but I thought the rates in their general vicinity were great.

Found: tent, deep in the Pemi

I can't remember the name... but this post immediately made me think of the guy who died up near South Twin (I think) in the winter a number of years ago. I know they were looking for his tent, but never found it. Might be worth calling the rangers about it?

    The Whitney Lottery

When we climbed Mt. Whitney for a July trip, we tried for a permit in the lottery but didn't manage to get one. We went anyway, thinking we'd try it as a day hike if we had to.... but we had no trouble getting a permit the day before. I'm not positive our experience is common, but kind of...

Can I carry Microspikes on board my flight ?

Definitely no to the hiking poles (.... I've tried that one... they have to be checked.) I've never tried microspikes in a carry on, so I'm not sure about that. Some airline attendants have issues with stoves.... though I've never had a problem with my soda can backpacking stove (I don't think...

Highpoint: Iowa. Hawkeye Point (1670 ft). July 22, 2010

Stinkyfeet is serious.... I have one of those little key chains too, though mine is blue. :) They had a supply of them in a box near the highpoint (as of 2007 at any rate.) Here's a (somewhat fuzzy) pic: Key chain

Highpoint: Kentucky. Black Mountain (4139 ft). June 15, 2010

I don't remember there being a plaque, but we were out there in 2005, so things may have changed up there. Who knows if the boulder is still there either..... it was a big flat one (or at least looks that way in my pictures.) We've had so-so luck finding survey markers on highpoints. Some are...

Highpoint: Kentucky. Black Mountain (4139 ft). June 15, 2010

I've enjoyed reading your highpointing reports. :) Not that it really matters, but if I remember correctly, the marker for Black Mtn wasn't under the tower, but on a boulder that was off in the woods at the edge of the clearing. It was very hard to spot and blended in with the rock pretty well...

    Killington via Bucklin Trail 1/30/10

Trail conditions: Bucklin Trail was a sheet of ice covered by a couple of inches of snow-- ranging from about one to three inches in all. Easy to follow and no blowdowns to speak of. I was able to bareboot for the first two miles (Cumulus used microspikes,) then we switched to snowshoes for...

    Cannon?

Hi-Cannon is my preferred winter route. In fact, I hiked Hi-Cannon on Saturday.... the ladder wasn't difficult at all (though they've gotten quite a bit of snow now.) I used snowshoes all the way without any troubles at all.... and there were a couple of guys who barebooted ahead of me. I headed...
