    Less People Hiking?

Peakbagger: I think it is reasonable to expect some drop off from COVID, but this may not be the best week to use to reach that conclusion. I think there is always a drop off just after winter ends, especially on weekends. I think a lot of people take a short break after hiking the 48s in...

    NH F&G Rescue Costs

There are two unions representing conservations officers; one for officers and one for supervisors (sergeant and above). As I read those contracts (they are available on the website of the state's Department of Administrative Services) CO's do get overtime for working beyond their scheduled work...

New Brew Pub in Gorham Open

Stopped in yesterday. Very impressed. The brews were tasty. Did not have any food but they seemed to be doing a brisk business on that front. Will definitely be back. They are currently just serving indoors but were hard at work on an outdoor Beer Garden. Within walking distance of the...

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

Quite right TEO. Like, I suspect, most folks on this board, I prefer to hike (and fish) away from crowds. However when I plan to get injured I always choose a busy spot!

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

I was lucky in many respects: 1. I was close to my car; 2. It was my left leg (so I could drive); 3. The bone was not displaced; and 4. By injuring myself at a popular tourist spot, during peak leaf-peeping season, I had a ready supply of people to help me.

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

Sorry to hear this PB. I am about a month ahead of you! I broke my fibula and sprained my ankle in mid-October while doing some (I thought) low risk walking/fishing at Falls Pond on the Kanc. Fortunately, was able to walk back to my car with assistance and drive to Memorial Hospital in North...

    Cog Rail Trail

My GPS had it at just under 3 miles from where Gulfside Trail crosses tracks to Cog Base Station. Add about .3 from summit (using Trinity Connector and Gulfside), and another .4 if parking at Ammo lot.

    Cog Rail Trail

We hiked this down about a month or so ago. By and large not any real problems (preferable to the upper Jewell in my opinion). The upper reaches are a combination of rocks, rail debris and old coal soot. Watch your ankles, as much of this is very loose. There are a few sections which would...

    Route 16 Closed this Weekend

Definitely a busy construction season on Route 16 in Ossipee/West Ossipee. I am guessing there will be a push to finish these, before winter really sets in. The project just North of the 16/28 intersection looks like it might be winding down. In the meantime, as mentioned, Route 153 is a...

    Route 16 Closed this Weekend

Looks like one lane is open. I am guessing they are alternating with NB and SB. There is actually a public camera which allows you to see the bridge in real time. public.earthcam.net/riverbridge I think is the internet address.

    Old school VFTT

This is a great thread. I regret I don't have pictures. Good to see so many VFTTers still hiking. I think I probably met more of this group at the Boston Beer Nights than I did on the trails. I specifically remember Alpinista (Lisa's) going away party at Hooters near North Station. While...

It's that time of year...Hunting Season

In over 30 years of hiking the Whites, yesterday was the first time I actually encountered hunters while I was on the hiking trail (as opposed to seeing them roadside). Saw a couple of hunters while about a mile in on the Carter-Moriah trail from Bangor Road. They were rifle hunters looking...

"The sound of gunfire, off in the distance - I'm used to it now" Planting this Talking Heads lyric into your response should not go unnoticed. Bravo!

REI North Conway Grand Opening coming Soon!

Looking forward to the opening. That they are moving right next door to the Black Cap Grille is a bonus! I. do hope EMS survives, and that the other locally-owned places (Ragged, IME) also hang in there. It is good for all of us hikers and outdoor-oriented folks.

Nice meeting you EB. Hope you had a great hike.

    Kayaking near North Conway

One of the parking areas on Route 16 is for locals but there is also one for the general public. Also, I think there is parking on/near the road which carries over the bridge between the larger lake and the smaller lake. (It might actually be called Chocorua Lake Road.)

    RIP Paradox :(

RIP Paradox. As Marty stated, the last (and I think only) time I hiked with John was the winter B-Z traverse. Despite the long day, we still had time after the hike to share pizza and beer and (as Marty also notes) some very inappropriate jokes. Wish I had hiked with him more often. A...
