    2012 Mt Kenya, Africa adventure

I was there in 2004, Ngorogoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Parks were great, we spent a couple of days around there and it's an amazing place. We hiked via Machame "Whiskey" Route.........Pole' - Pole'

    Options for Bonds Hike

Options for Bonds Hik We just stayed at Guyot, they had a bear up there a couple of weeks ago. The site has some nice sturdy locking bear boxes. They charge $8 per person. We arrived around 1PM and by 3PM they were filling up pretty fast. When we camped off the Bondcliff trail the day...

bike path walk from Greeleaf trailhead down to Skookcumchuck trailhead?

I made the mistake of coming down the Skook, you are wise to climb it. That trail is a muddy mess and very slippery.

Kilimanjaro training in the Whites - foul weather alternatives??

Kilimanjaro scree I've been on the Kili scree fields, coming down the South Tripyramid slide is good training. Doing all three up Scar and down South Tripyramid slide is a good elevation day. Good luck, it's an awesome trip. If you get to visit other National Parks afterwards in Tanzania, I...

    Morgan/Percival questions

I agree, Percival first if you're going to do a loop. The Mount Morgan trail avoids the ladder section if you don't want to descend that way. The parking lot should be open but if it's not, there's plenty of parking alongside the road. This is a fun hike, enjoy! The hike over to Squam Peak...

    2012 - 4,000 Footer Club dinner-award ceremony

The "Dogs are not allowed Rule" in Pawtuckaway is not enforced. There are many dogs in the park. I've been there the past 5 weekends both at the main entrance and at the northern entrance and am seeing tons of dogs. The road into the park is closed but you can park in the big parking lot at...

I agree with Mohamed, our 4-year old loved Mt Roberts, and the blueberries were a bonus.

    Colorado's Rocky Mt NP

I've done this hike and can say it is a fantastic day-hike. Ypsilon is spectacular, there are marmots on Chiquita and there are elk everwhere. A good warm-up hike that isn't mentioned is a hike up towards Longs Peak to Chasm Lake which is at the foot of the spectacular cliff making up Longs...

Hi Tom I am just getting around to reading your book and am enjoying it. Life's been crazy...

Hi Tom I am just getting around to reading your book and am enjoying it. Life's been crazy with three young kids and reading time's been seriously reduced :) I didn't get a single high winter peak done this year, shameful! I guess that's what infant twins will do for you. Hope to see you...

Life cycle of ticks and what we should expect this year

I disagree. I spoke to my dr on the phone yesterday. He says if you can get the dose within 24 hrs you won't get Lyme. Not guaranteed but the percentage is very high. Seems kind of strange to have to wait for the disease to show up to treat it. He said to watch for fever, swelling etc...

Life cycle of ticks and what we should expect this year

Thanks for the advice! being fair skinned I do have to take precautions with the sun. This is my third year in a row getting bitten and Doxy works very well for me as long as you get it quickly. Its one dose and costs just over a dollar for two pills, many doctors will send in the...

    Over mitts

For me the fur backing is an extra layer of insulation. It sheds the snow pretty easily also.

Franconia Ridge Traverse, Lafayette to Flume, 1/21/2012

Great pictures BigEarl. I am living vicarously through your pictures this winter as we are raising three young children under the age of four and my days of winter hiking are temporarily on hold. I have done that ridge traverse 4 times but never in winter, it looks like fun! Love #39, 44, 49...

    Over mitts

I love my military surplus Air Force arctic mittons. Gloves are leather with a fake fur backing and wool liners. Amazing warmth, you can buy them at military surplus stores.

    Mts Flagg-Shaw-Black Snout-Big Ball (Tate)

Look for mostly dry conditions, some camoflauged ice on rocks so be careful. We went up from Merrovista to Flagg, over the Gorilla Trail to Shaw then Carriage to Black Snout and then the Tate Mt Trail to Big Ball and the Band-aid trail down. Northern sides were more icy but there was no snow...

    MT Zealand 12/24/11

I think Zealand as a dayhike in winter is one of the toughest mentally. Doing that road-walk on the way in and out is so boring. Good job and good luck finishing the winter 48.
