    Pole reccomendations....

Black Diamond makes a couple of poles that use a flip lock to keep the sections extended rather than the standard screw and expander found in most poles. I've had good luck with the Black Diamond poles staying open even with a lot of body weight on them (I too am not of the small frame design)...

    Summit Rituals/Traditions ?

If the peak has an obvious USGS survey bolt at the top, and if the temp is above freezing (I'd look pretty silly getting rescued with my lips stuck to a summit bolt), I crouch down and kiss the marker. I started this one on Algonquin, my first Adk peak, about eight years ago... -C

    Are Storm King's trails open???

Hi all...So, I know that this question is prob way out of date, but I'm having trouble finding any current info on Storm King's trails on here or anywhere else on the net. Winter 46er list

Everest, anyone? To me the arguments presented in this thread are common debates that extend across all of outdoor sport. Think of the neverending debates in mountaineering communities about the "correct" ways to scale some of the world's highest peaks...Oxygen or no oxygen? Sherpas or no...

    Winter Car Question???

My 2001 VW Golf (yes, that's right, a tiny little VW Golf) weighs in at a measly 2800 pounds, but is a tank in the Adirondacks and Catskills in the winter on a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks. The price of a new Golf is only a shade over $16,000 if you don't mind forgoing leather seats and the like...

You know might be addicted to hiking...

When your wedding plans include a ceremony on Cascade complete with family and friends in "semi-formal" hiking garb. This would describe my wedding plans up until a few months ago when the future in-laws put my ideas to rest. Darn flatlanders...

    Where to Finish?

RPR all the way If you can, and I know this will involve way too much planning and a little luck...Hike RPR from the Elizabethtown side on a sunny day in early fall. James R. Burnside recommended this in his well known guide book (although he didn't finish his 46 there), and I followed his...

    Mountaineering boots!

La Sportiva boots rock I have had three different mountaineering boot selections from La Sportiva in the past ( the K3- no longer available, the Nepal Extreme- more suited to vertical ice, and the Makalu- the pair that I'd recommend for you), and I have been very impressed with each in their...

    2004 .... 2005

2004...They paid me, if you can believe it... A few highlights of my 2004: -landed a gig as a backpacking instructor for a local university, and they paid me to instruct ten college students in the finer points of fall hiking and camping in the Northeast (life is wonderful!) -rediscovered the...

    Post Hike Traditions

There's nothing like a full meal followed by a fine slice of one of the many berry pies at the Noonmark...And by the look of this thread, I'm not the only one who thinks so! -C.

Location of cave on Twin (Catskills)???

Thanks! Imarchant and others - Thanks for the info...I'll have to look for it the next time I'm down that way. Ironically, my fiancee spotted the small opening that you're referring to this past weekend, but I didn't take the time to check it out... Warren - Great pic...I love the quarry. -C.

Location of cave on Twin (Catskills)???

My NY/NJ Trail Conference map notes a cave just below Twin's main summit. On two trips to Twin this spring the only feature that I've noticed in the area below the summit has been the obvious overhanging rock shelter below the lemon squeezer about 0.2 miles from the top. Is this the "cave", or...
