Descending the Dudley Trail - Katahdin

The guide book says that there are no water sources above treeline, and there is considerable trail above treeline on Katahdin. Plus you are gaining elevation very quickly. I always drink more when the terrain is steep, so I always carry more water.

Descending the Dudley Trail - Katahdin

Unrelenting DOWN I descended the Dudley Trail after going up Cathedral and across Knife's Edge. It isn't a long trail - but the "down" is unrelenting. IIRC, it seemed as if every step required butt scooting - or at least a decent "jump" down. I don't think there were too many times when I...

    Bear Brook State Park Question

I've hiked in Bear Brook many times. There is a five mile loop (using several different trails) that I have done several times as a full moon snow shoe hike! It's fabulous. The terrain is very gentle (thus beginners can easily do this). Yes there are snowmobiles, but they are not allowed on...

    In praise of environmental progress

Bald Eagles A pair of bald eagles built a nest (it is HUGE!!!) in a pine tree near Craig's parent's camp in Jefferson, Maine. There was at least one offspring (but we think two). We're hoping they'll be back next year.

    A steep and cheap oops!

I have now gone into my account information and added shipping address, etc. so that I can just checkout with one click! Now, on the off chance I see a $1.00 sale, I might just snag one (or not).....

    A steep and cheap oops!

It is madness! I was watching the web site just a few minutes ago when a women's soft shell jacket came up for $1 (can't remember the name brand). I immediately clicked to purchase and put all my info in, and when I went to checkout - it was already gone!!!! Someone else had been a bit...

    Blue Job Mountain - 9/1/09

I LOVE Blue Job!!! It's about 8 miles from where I live, so I can get there within 15 minutes. For a little peak, it's got a LOT of bang for the buck! Sunsets can be spectacular and I love that you can see all the way to the Whites - including Mt. Washington!!

    Pesky Rash

I also get the exact same rash, which I believe is "heat" rash. It looks the same as what my kids got when they were babies. It is more likely to occur in hot and humid weather. I have tried various combinations of socks and liners and only recently stumbled upon a winning combination: liner...

Do you take painkillers, ibuprofen, etc. when hiking?

I used to take a lot of "vitamin I" when I hiked as I had/have problems with my knees (some arthritis going on in the old joints as I have gotten older). A couple before driving to the trailhead; then another couple at the summit; maybe some more once I was back at the car; and another dose...

2 August 2009: Nancy via Nancy Pond Tr., herdpath, North Conway memorial

Wow - that was quite an adventure! I'm sure it was far more than you had anticipated at the outset. Thanks for all the pictures - it really does make me feel like I was there. I always carry a Sam Splint with me when I hike. It's very light weight (similar to an empty soda can) and can be...

    Traditional Fall Gathering 2009?

I'll vote for Useless in Eustis as well. One of the BEST gatherings to date. Especially since I didn't need to be "rescued" by Bubba. :D
