Reading the trail conditions I just ran into a fascinating report of a bushwhack to Terrace Mountain. I read the report, where the writers say that they left the trail at about 1,950 feet, and looked at the map. Sure enough, this cuts out some distance.

Roy Scweiker has addressed the issue of Why Bushwhack When There Are Trails, and reminds us that on a completely unbroken trail in winter bushwhacking may be easier than attempting to follow the trail!

Should have followed my own advice :)

I once did the trail loop over Cabot-Terrace southbound, the trail down was all sidehill the same direction for maybe a mile in unbroken snow, and my knees and thighs felt it. (The rest of the route seemed to alternate better, and Cabot was previously broken.)

Actually I did bushwhack down the previous time, but this trip I was trail-bagging :)
