Be Advised: The Green Mountain Club is closing Pico Camp until unauthorized occupancy of the shelter can be resolved by local authorities. This is a matter of public safety and hikers should find an alternate overnight site or accommodation.

We appreciate the concern and patience of the hiking community as we work to resolve this matter.

Alternative Overnight Suggestions:

• Churchill Scott Shelter or Tucker Johnson Shelter on the Long Trail North

• Cooper Lodge or Governor Clement Shelter on the Long Trail South

• The Inn at the Long Trail on U.S. Route 4

Various reports out there of a belligerent individual that has staked a claim to the shelter acting very aggressively to anyone attempting to use it. Its on private land near the top of Pico so not very easy deal with.

A bummer as the location is quite impressive with views to the east, but the cabin itself is pile of kindling waiting for a match. Reportedly one of threats is if someone tries to stay in it the individual will light it on fire.

It’s been going on for at least a couple years: allegedly a guy who calls himself “Salt” and has pretty much taken up residence there. He’s particularly abusive to women and has actually assaulted a few people. Evidently he’s out on bail awaiting trial for burning down someone’s house. It seems the police E either unwilling or unable to “get him the help he needs.” There’s been a lot of talk about this on the GMC FB group.
