Network Issue at Irvine DataCenter
Posted (April 12th, 2012 at 9:22 am PST) by brians

We are currently experiencing issues with our Irvine datacenter. We have our network team looking into it and are working to get service restored as soon as possible. As soon as we have further information we will be updating this post.

Update Apr 12, 10:42am PDT: Connectivity to our Irvine datacenter is continuing to have intermittent issues. The flapping (up and down) of links is causing high CPU on our routers as well as that of our upstream providers so we’re endeavoring to move some routes manually on our end to work around the issue and restore service fully. – Oscar

Update Apr 12, 10:22am PDT: We are still seeing intermittent unavailability to our Irvine datacenter. Our entire team is continuing to monitor the situation and work towards full resolution with our upstream providers. – Oscar

Update Apr 12, 10:02am PDT: Our network engineers are on the phone with one of our upstream providers. We are working on both ends and are troubleshooting and some connectivity has been restored. We are hopeful that we are out of the woods but are continuing to verify services in Irvine. -Oscar

Update Apr 12, 9:42am PDT: Our system administration team and networking team are still working on the issue. At this point we’ve verified that there is severe connectivity degradation in our Irvine datacenter. As soon as we have further information we will update this post. -Oscar

I am keeping track of the performance and reliability problems. If things do not get better, then I will try and find a better hosting option for February, 2013 (when the current plan expires.) They rate highly on usability and features and service for cost, but reliability of late has been far below par.

Sorry for the downtime :(

DDoS Attacks in Q1 2012 Exceed All of 2011 Combined

Dreamhost.com was again the target of a DDoS attack. A statement on their website says they have resolved the problem, updated software, and added additional routers to prevent this from happening again. Only time will tell if that is the case.

Don't let your internet-connected device join the botnet. Be sure you have current anti-virus software running where available.

Support Ticket Opened

I opened a support ticket with the hosting company because the last two evenings, the database service was flaky or unavailable. I apologize of any unavailability. You would get "Internal server error..." in the browser when this happens. I get an e-mail, so I know when something goes astray.

DreamHost is upgrading servers. Site maintenance window is 11am-1pm July 24th PST.

That's Wednesday afternoon 3-5pm EDT. Expect the site to be unavailable for some or all of that time.

Site Availability will be disrupted on TUESDAY August 25, starting at 1PM EDT.

Our technical operations team is constantly working to improve our services. As part of these improvements, we will be moving your MySQL VPS to a new location while upgrading the MySQL version to 5.6. This migration will take place this Tuesday, the 25th of August, starting at 10AM PDT. Migrating the databases from their current location will take all day to complete, however you will only experience 5 to 20 minutes of downtime when your VPS is actually moved. During this maintenance, please try not to make any updates to your site. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause!
