I visited the Yale University Art Gallery last weekend and they had the Frederic Edwin Church painting of Mt Katahdin from 1853. Really cool to see this original work in person. The Art Gallery also had an original Thomas Cole painting of the Catskills which was awesome.

It's a gorgeous painting and very representative of the Hudson River School style of painting of which he was a prominent adherent.

That romantic glowing style of lighting in the painting is called luminism, with the lighting sometimes described as luminescent. Albert Bierstadt was another painter who popularized the style, often painting western US landscapes during this same period.

The library in St Johnsbury VT, the Atheneum, had a great collection of Hudson River School art. There is a very large Bierstadt painting, The Domes of Yosemite.
