They did in fact attach - that's why the attachment link is there. Click on the link to see the attachment. They aren't, however, inlined. There are instructions in the Site Help forum as well as in the FAQ on how to attach and how to inline as well as how to inline from third-party hosting sites.

OK, here are some ideas:

What browser are you using?
What is the exact URL in the browser's address bar while you are reading this post? (use [code][/code] tags to keep it from parsing)
What is the exact URL in the browser's address bar for which you receive the Invalid Link message?

I am pretty sure I know what is going on.

Do you see an image below?

attachment.php

If it ain't snowin' there, we ain't goin' there.
I'm using Safari and I've had the same trouble as the others. And I don't see the image you referenced.

The text of the alleged link appears as "Attachment 4794Attachment 4795Attachment 4796Attachment 4797". The code for the thread appears as
Code:
http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?51759-Bear-tracks#post404440

For each of the links I have this (but numbered for each of the four individually):
Code:
http://www.vftt.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=4795

Same as sardog1 except that I use Chrome. And I can't see the image you posted.

Interesting. Here's what I can detect:

IF I am logged in, then the image appears both inline and when I click the link.
This is true for Firefox (Windows), Chrome (Windows), Internet Explorer (Windows), and Safari (iPhone).

If I am not logged in, then the image is not visible (I get a red x above, or Invalid Attachment.)

There have long been complaints about how vBulletin handles images. There are numerous hacks and plug-ins one can install, however, I loathe to do so since these plug-ins have shown to be a vector for attack on this very installation of vBulletin (hence they got removed.)

Some things you can check:

  • Make sure your bookmark or address includes the full www.vftt.org prefix. I do have the web server set up to redirect, but there might be cases where this does not work. If you are using just vftt.org then the cookies (saved login information) for www.vftt.org will not be passed along (and vice versa)
  • Try it in another available browser

In the past, there was a problem with storing attachments, however, we now have unlimited disk space so that's less of an issue. I still do recommend, in general, that images be hosted off site and linked to using [img]...[/img] tags as described in the Site Help sticky post and in the FAQ.

I assume you (you who cannot see the image above) can see my earlier contribution? That image is hosted externally and not subject to any login requirements from vBulletin.

Tim

p.s. ETA - I cannot access the web server logs from work. Tonight, I can possibly look for errors in the logs corresponding to those of you who are having problems. If not tonight, possibly some other night... if anyone wants to volunteer, let me know, and we can talk off-line about how to test this. I'll also run a test or two when I'm logged out to see what the web server is logging.

This works (including clicking on the thumbnails), the OP's attachments do not. (I get an "Invalid Attachment specified." error.)

Thanks. I have not yet gone back an re-processed all attachments... I'm guessing you have some referrer stuff turned off, Doug? I'm fairly certain that by some to-be-determined means, the image references are not being made as "you", i.e., they are logged out/anonymous.

Can you tell me what security settings you've specifically changed? (E-mail me it that is easier.)

Thx,
Tim

Test of attached images - how does this look to folks who had problems?

View attachment 4799 View attachment 4800 View attachment 4801

Just an extra data point for you Tim. The quoted post shows 3 images fine, clicking them brings up the full image properly too. The OP attachments come up with the invalid attachment error folks are mentioning. Your earlier post (#6) asking about an image showing has nothing but a couple of blank lines until "Tim" for me.

Firefox (25.0.1, pretty light on the mods) on Win 7, logged in, and yes I have the www prefix.

EDIT: Same scenario on Chrome, which is a default installation with no settings changed or addons installed.

OK, that's some progress. Do you have non-default security settings and/or a proxy or other filter?

Tim

No, just standard settings. I run Chrome on my PC (XP), Chromebook and S4 - with syncing turned on, so no exotic configurations, proxy or filter settings. And most of the Extensions are those by Google. Sometimes I enable AdBlock Plus, but it's incompatible with some sites I visit regularly, so mostly now I leave it off.

I just tried it with a second copy of firefox that is at its default settings and bypasses the proxy, both logged in and not. Same results.

At a glance, there are no errors in the logs for your IP (Doug). The request sequence seems rather complex, involving loading several javascript files. This is similar to the sequence that I receive when I ask for the image via chrome and I am not logged in. When I ask for the attachment with Firefox, I get one single request, with the appropriate mime type and returned content type.

I will have to dig around more to understand the sequence involved and when/if it is known to have errors.
