Oh, those canoe-crazy Mainers. Seems they can't build anything without thinking about a possible need to accommodate paddlers, whatever the size of the craft:

Just the Merrimack, also known as the Virginia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSS_Virginia.

(The Monitor had a very different shape--it looked like a cylindrical turret with cannon sticking out on one side.)

Both the Virgina and Zumwalt-class destroyers have the tumblehome shape (wider at the waterline than at the top)--the Virginia to deflect cannonballs, the Zumwalt-class destroyers to deflect radar waves (part of stealth).

I suspect that none of them would be very easy to paddle...
