I really like that quote in the end:

"A man who is not afraid of sea will soon be drowned, he said,
For he will be going out on a day he shouldn’t.
But we do be afraid of the sea,
And we do only be drowned now and again."

one what not

I thought it looked familar...
but on the topic of what not to do....
I had a vague awarness that there might be some negatives about using a paddle leash...so I guess this is what not to do with your paddle (other than losing it in the mud).
I was nervous about some of the currents and tides in Plum Island Sound and decided to land ashore to check things out . There was a strong back wash of water as I was getting out. The leash was tethered to the decking and I had pushed the paddle into the sand as I was getitng out...sure enough the boat still tried to pull away into the current.
I grabbed the boat and pulled it towards me... just as the paddle freed itself and came hurling towards me javelin style....a near miss !
I couldn't believe all the torque that leash had from being stretched to the max like that!
