The first of 2 hikes on Sunday brought us to Grandview Mountain and it's East Peak, #74 on the Fire Tower List of the 93 towers that are standing, once stood or were proposed.
We parked at a pull off on Elbow Pond Road in Woodstock, NH across from the snowmobile trail we were going to take to the Mt Cilley Trail. There is room for 4-5 cars. The trail was overgrown, but there is a definite path through it that hikers use. Being a snowmobile trail is was quite easy to follow and at times got a little boring. When we started the overgrowth was high and wet, we did get soaked up to our knees, but as the day wore on it got better.
We were expecting to come to the Mt Cilley Trail after roughly 1.5 miles, but there was no notable place where that happened. The GPS showed the trail coming in from the left, but it's not there anymore. The snowmobile trail did turn right and continued. All the water crossing naturally had snowmobile bridges so the hike is easy.
At around 2.4 miles we started our ascent of Grandview Mountain on the abandoned Grandview Mountain Trail. Looking off to the left the trail is somewhat evident. We followed it up to a blowdown area and lost it about 0.12 miles from the summit. On our descent back out, we did find the trail from the summit and was able to follow it all the way back down to the snowmobile trail.
The summit of Grandview has no grand views. LOL It is about 0.1 miles long and we hiked across it to the col, went down and up the other side to the East Peak. We ended up just finding an approach that was steep, but doable to the summit. The East Peak is another non-grand view summit, but there are fire tower remains to be found. We spent some time there exploring the area looking for all the artifacts and found a great deal of them.
The hike out was uneventful , we hiked a total of 7 miles in 4 hours and 26 minutes, but spent a lot of time on East Peak.
We did post a video of the day for anyone interested in seeing the hike...
