I recently hiked the beautiful Golden Eagle Trail, considered to be one of PA's finest dayhikes. We also included the new Dragon's Back Trail, to create a longer, rugged 11 mile loop. This was an excellent hike. There were the famous views from Ravenshorn and the cascades and pools of Wolf Run, which created a cooling breeze on such a hot day. At the top of the drainage was a pine forest with some large trees. The views at Beulahland Vista were superb as we could see for about 30 miles. We then left the Golden Eagle Trail and into unknown territory. The Dragon's Back Trail was an excellent addition to the hike with a narrowing ridge and steep slopes under pine trees. The views over Pine Creek, Slate Run, and Little Slate Run were superb. The escarpment above Pine Creek was very steep with views through the trees. I then took a side trail to a view across Bonnell Run and an old quarry with red pine trees. The Dragon's Back Trail switchbacked down to Pine Creek. We then followed the rail trail to complete the loop, with great views of pristine Pine Creek and many kayakers. We saw a bald eagle and dame's rocket was in full bloom. This was an excellent hike in a beautiful region. I recommend adding the Dragon's Back Trail to the Golden Eagle Trail for a longer loop.
