    Why Do You Hike?

Thanks Grumpy! As I get older (especially since 9/11 and crossing over the 50 line) I have tended to think more about things like the meaning of life and our purpose here on Earth. I've been trying to write down as much as I can for my website & journal so when I'm dead and gone my kids (who...

    Why Do You Hike?

...... continued from previous post ..... My home hiking trails and home waters deprived me of world records, poundage, and dollar signs. On those wretched ponds and flat trails you had to find meaning enough in the act alone. Otherwise you were better off on the football field, basketball...

    Why Do You Hike?

LONG... but check it out! Inane Hiking for Diving Webster's: void of sense or intelligence, silly, pointless by Capt. Jim Hinckley I grew up in Marlboro, Mass., at the time it was referred to as a suburb of Boston. Now it's simply called Metro West. Most of my boyhood hiking and diving...

conditioning - running - what is good time??

I hear ya Stan...... True on both counts!!! They call it Sport Specific Training... ie: HIKE to get in shape for HIKING! Makes sense don't it? I hate "running" too. That's why my "runs" are actually jogs (as my times show). Intervals of fast walking with intervals of slow running depending...

conditioning - running - what is good time??

giggy... where in Mass you from? I just came back from a run. Went to Wachusett, with the kids of course. I couldn't push them up the Auto Road as there is still too much snow. They don't plow it in winter and it's popular with the x-country crowd so I wouldn't go tearing it up with bare boots...

Frugal Yankee (or am I cheap?)

Penny wise & Pound foolish.... We New Englanders can sometimes be a bit foolish... like the time I drove 3 hours (150miles) round trip to save $50.00 on a scuba regulator. How much $$$ in time and gas I wasted I don't even want to know

conditioning - running - what is good time??

Actually...... Usually when I'm doing it I have the kids with me in the stroller so I'm limited to the Auto Road. But it's a nice run and you have some great views on the way up. It's 3.3 miles up because of the switchbacks. or... if you want to add a little trail to your running you can park...

conditioning - running - what is good time??

Out taxes are too high for the town services we get... I'm literally 5 minutes from Mt. Wachusett... I can see it from my street... convienent hiking & workouts especially since its a 3 1/2 hour ride to the Whites. I love it here in Hubbardston :D Capt. Jim

conditioning - running - what is good time??

I think your time is great! Now if you can keep that up for longer distances or/and add hills you'd have a helluva workout. I used to do 5 mile workouts, little ups & downs but nothing great. Now instaed of adding miles (cuz it takes more time that I don't have) I instead run up and down Mount...

Measuring the how steep a slope is.

Who says you shouldn't hike alone??? I do it all the time...and I bet if you took a poll you'd find probably 90% (or more) of the people on this board have backpacked/hiked solo before. Just know there IS additional RISK going solo, and you must be prepared to accept that risk (and the...

    Teepee Tent Setup

They come with a centerpole... or you can use a trekking pole. As for staking them down ... I've seen snow anchors. For lack of a better description they look like a mini parachute. http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/accessdetail.cfm?PRODUCTS__productID=MTH116 They are supposed to work...
