Alpine Ski Areas in MA for a novice

The bunny hill has its own double chair, and is an incredibly short ride. The day we were there the quad wasn't running, so the way back over to the summit chair was by taking the little double to the top of the bunny hill, which is on a traverse to the skier's right on the mountain where the...

The Beast is a great area. I was there last Monday. Check their website at The Beast -- they have deals all the time. Monday is "Coke Day" -- $15 all day lift ticket with a Coke product! The conditions page lists the deals. On their trail map, Roundabout is a great beginner trail from the...

Outtabounds I need to partially take back my earlier comments on the Outtabounds. I had a chance to use them again at Windblown yesterday during the storm. There was about 4 inches of fresh unbroken powder on the Open Slope, so I tried tele turns again. This time I had no problem making turns...

Clarification on Wachusett Telemark Demo Dates I just got an email from Martin Fey from Teleboards. They will be at Wachusett every other Thursday until "conditions start to deteriorate". Which means probably March 3rd and 17th. They have many skis and teleboards to demo, and supply tele boots...

Alpine Ski Areas in MA for a novice

I have the Excursions and used them exclusivly for 2 months at Wachusett with my Rossignol/G3 setup while I was learning tele. They're actually quite good and I had no trouble with them on the blues, as long as they were groomed. Any bumps or irregularities and I tended to go into the back seat...

Marshall -- It's not a "traditional" backcountry ski, but the folks from Teleboards were at Wa last night doing a demo, and I tried this ski It's actually an alpine camber ski with a waxless pattern that looks suspiciously like Karhu's fishscales. Despite the good luck more proficient people...

FYI -- Conditions at Wa last night were excellent considering the weather the last 2 weeks. Much better than I thought. I highly recommend it right now, and it'll only get better with the snowmaking and possible storm Monday. Mark PS -- MichaelJ was making some pretty good turns!

Hey MichaelJ -- I might head up there tomorrow night. I don't think I'm going to Crotched tonite, so that'll be the last time I have a chance to get out before the Feb Vacation Nightmare begins. I'll PM you tomorrow if I go. Depends on conditions. As far as beginner terrain goes -- as soon as...

Was anyone at Crotched today? I'm supposed to go up there tomorrow with some people from work for the 2 for 1, but with this weather I don't know if it's worth the trip. Last Wednesday it was OK, but alternated from just slush to slush over ice. Made telemarking real interesting.

Surface lifts are lifts in which you are pulled or conveyed up the mountain with your feet on the ground -- rope or handle tows and "magic carpets" are two. J-bars, t-bars, etc. are other types. At Wa, Monadnock serves the beginner slopes to the left facing the hill. You'll get very quickly...

Hey, anyone for a mini-Gathering at WA? I'm a Century Pass holder, so I'm pretty much a regular. Evenings are best for me as well, and I'm flexible -- I'm 20 minutes from the mountain. I'm easy to pick out, ususally the only telemarker in site, and it's not pretty  Next week, however...

A bit more than 1 hour, maybe about 1.5 to 2 for you, but I skied here for the first time yesterday: Berkshire East On Mondays they have "Coke Day" -- bring a Coka Cola product and you ski all day for $15! Very quiet place, and no rude morons! There was good novice terrain, as well as some of...
